I have a 98 whaler and Ive noticed blister development in the gel coating.I wax the hull 2x a year to protect against this but it progressively gets worse. Is this typical to the whalers or is it the year made or even the model? Should I paint the bottom at this point or have a shop redo the Gelcoat?
What do you guys think?

A coat of wax will not help w/ blistering. Most manufactuers will tell you never to leave a boat in the water for a extended periog of time. Gelcoat is a permiable (sp)surface. Water can pentrate it over time if left in the water. Simliar to osomosis. Are you the original owner? How Long? How long do you leave the boat in the water? That may answer some of the questions. Get the blisters repaired. Do not leave it in the water. Hope this helps

I have the same problem with my 1985 25' Revenge. I was told it is a common problem. I was also quoted $2,500 to repait the blisters and repaint the bottom with a barrier coat.

there are several types of blistering. most commonly, osmotic blistering will be fairly consistent over a large area of the hull below the waterline. if your blistering is confined to a relatively small area, it may be due to voids in the gelcoat, voids in the fiberglass laminate, or uncured resin. these defects are common in many fiberglass boats, particularly if they use a chopper gun during they layup process. if these defects are below the waterline it is likely they will fill with water by osmosis and take on similar characteristics of osmotic blisters. i'm not sure if they are still available, but whaler used to keep hull records of every boat they built. these hull records detail any touch up that may have been required on the hull. if your blisters show up only in an area that was touched up at the factory, that could be the source of your blistering.

its odd that you should mention that the blisters should be consistant throughout the bottom to be related to a substandard layup or material. my problem is limited to a few areas and especially in the vicinity of the strakes. last spring, i discovered a void beneath the gelcoat, starbord side underneath and near the corner of the strake which is also beneath the waterline. if the development of blistering is due to a limited area, where voids occur and is likely a result of the doctoring up of the hull after its made then would you thick it should be covered under warrentee?
