Since some lowlife swiped my outboard of off my Rage(converted),i now need to repower and since the Dauntless hull is similar in size and weight,i would like opinions from the minimum hp up to maximum.I hada 70 hp johnson on mine, but would consider a 50 or ? since i run light and alone most of the time.I am not into sking or anything like that.

Bob,, I'm really sorry to here about you losing your outboard, that is really to bad. There is a rage up for sale on ebay now. With twin 25's. If I were you I would e-mail him and ask him how the boat performed with the 50hp.

Good luck,
11

Bob,

I would suspect that the 50hp would run great with your specifications. Just like many of the old 15's were powered with 50's, though the Dauntless is a little bit heavier there is plenty of power to plane and run.

Bob,

Having owned a 1994 Dauntless 15 with a 60HP Evinrude, I suspect that the 50HP would be sufficient for your purposes as stated. I am disturbed to hear that your motor was stolen...especially after all of your hard work!

Thanks for the info Paul.I am considering the 50 for the hood clearance as well,i realize the 70 will have lots of grunt, and my boat could handle 40 more pounds with no problem.I have no idea what would tempt anyone to steal a 1975 O/B????????Do you know what the minimum hp was for a 15 dauntless?

Bob,

According to my 1994 Boston Whaler catalogue, the minimum HP for the Dauntless 15 is 30. The maximum is 70. Later, I think that the maximum was increased to 75 to accomodate the 75HP Mercury.

I have a Dauntless 15 powered by Merc 50 hp 4 stroke. Top speed is about 30 mph on the GPS. I use a Stingray hydrofoil, so that adds a bit of drag, and probably costs ~1 mph top end. Most times I cruise on plane in the 18-22 mph range.
