Looking at buying a 1996 17 Outrage. I am somewhat hesitant because of the power (or lack of). It has a 90hp Honda 4 stroke.
I am not a speed freak but I also want to be able to fish with up to three people on board. Good idea or bad? What is a fair price for this combo (trailer not included)? Thanks for any feedback.

Want ... - Welcome to the Forum.

I have a '96 17 OR and have a 115 Johnson "OceanRunner" on it. It is a good compromise - will get right up on plane with 3-4 adults + and will idle at about 1.5 - 2 mph. Incidently, I am up in the air about 5000 feet. ------ Jerry/Idaho

Thanks for the quick response Jerry. When you say "it is a good compromise" do you mean that you think the 90 will push it okay? Do you have any idea what a fair price for this combo (no trailer) is on the East Coast?

Want a Whaler,

My experience with the 17 Outrage has been similar to that described by Jerry Townsend. One of my brothers owns a 1998 Outrage 17 with a two-stroke 115 Mercury. It planes well and runs well at a comfortable cruise speed with that engine.

I think that the 90 on that boat, especially in a four-stroke, would be underpowering it a bit.

Want-a-Whaler, I have the Honda 90 on my 16' Dauntless. My boat is 200 lbs lighter than yours but they have similar hulls. With a 15 pitch prop, my boat hops up on plane, pulls a 200 lbs skier and does 38 mph. It also averages between 2 to 3 gallons per hour. If you are a speed demon, I would recommed a boat with a larger motor. The Honda 90 would be the minnimum I would put on a 17' Outrage.

Want ... -- Basically I was saying the 115 would work well - and, though I didn't say it, the 90 might be on the light side - but, the engine is a Honda 4 cycle. I would ask for a test trial and see how it shakes out.

Price? - I am not a good authority on price, particularily with the boat being on the east coast. Hopefully someone else will provide you with some help here. --- Jerry/Idaho

Want,
I have a 96 OR with a 115 Yamy and T-Top perfect shape and I payed 17500. I am in Savannah, Ga. That was with a trailer of course. Also I think with a 90 you would run in mid 30's(just a guess). With 115 I run low 40's. Hopes this helps. Stan

Well....I am not the boatless formerly known as "Want_a_Whaler". I am now the proud owner of a "new-to-me" Outrage 17.
I don't know if "Have_a_Whaler" is taken yet but I will check it out :)

I have a ton of questions so if you see a million threads about the Outrage 17 from a new user, you know where they are coming from. Cheers and thanks everyone for the help on this site.

Congratulations, did you buy the 1996 17' Outrage with the Honda 90? Do you mind saying how much you paid for it? Enjoy....

I think that boat has been up for question here before(twice before) and the buyers wanted more power and did not purchase. If it was the same boat, sounds like a nice rig and I bet you got a great deal. If one day down the road you want more power, you will get a good amount for that Honda so don't sweat it.

Funny thing about 4 strokes is they take a while to plane but when you add 3 people, the don't take much longer than with just one. You should see 35mph and depending on where and how you drive, may be all you will ever need.

The local state police where my father lives, use the commercial division 17 outrage, and they have a ocean runner 175 on it,let me tell you, that thing SCREAMS!!!The younger trooper took me for a spin on it one time and it was at least a hour before i could get that stupid s**t eating grin off my face, the weight did'nt seem too bad,and according to him,it really was'nt that bad on fuel if you did'nt hammer it all the time.If i had to take a guess,i bet we were doing 55mph and i think he had more to go.

It is my thire whaler (13'/40hp & 21'or ladder side/2 55hp bearcats back in the 70s) Looking forward to the use of this new boat up in the Atlantic City area this summer. Glad to see what kind of boating I can expect from this craft. Thanks

Whaler 3,
Congratulations on your new purchase. In 2000 I bought a 1997 17 ft OR with the 115 Johnson Ocean Runner and trailer. It is a great boat! It is my first Whaler. I have always heard how Whalers hold their value. I paid $17,000 for mine in 2000. Would you mind sharing what you paid for yours? I am also in N.J. It would be interesting to see how much mine depreciated in 3 years.

fjjpal Thanks for the reply. I gave 15,500 for it. It has a lowrance x75, radio, fish station, & t-top on it with a float on trailer. Seems very clean (no dings) and engine runs like a clock. What part of jersey do you fish?

Whaler3, I guess they do hold their value, although mine is more bare bones than yours. I don't have all those goodies. My family has a lake house in upstate NY and I use the boat there. Congratulations again, hope you have many good years with your new OR
