Just purchased a 17 ft Montauk and want to equip it with a Garmin 188 and Icom VHF. Any suggestions on the best/cheapest place to purchase these items online. Any help would be great, thanks.

Consumer Marine Electronics, Wall, NJ. Good outfit.

The sonar/GPS electronics industry are experts at price fixing, and are a hard nut to crack. There are minor variations in store pricing, but it is hard to find this spread much more than 5%. They seem to have achieved a headlock on their dealerships - you deep discount and you're history. Avoid West Marine & their Boat/US stores.

I am lucky to have a West Marine store within a mile of the house. They honor others advertised prices, including Website pricing. I find the best deal I can online, print the web page or shopping cart page, then take it down to my friendly West Marine store. They have a lot of electronics in stock and are happy to let you try them out in the store. Their advertised prices are far from the lowest around, but don't let that stop you from asking for a lower price. They will match or beat others' offerings.

There is an additional benefit to using bsmotril's suggestion to buy at West but get them to price match. If you are a member of the West Advantage club (free loyalty program) you will get points added to your account for every purchase. Periodically they send you a gift certificate for $10 depending on how much you spend.

I got my Garmin 162 at www.dunhamsports.com. It was the cheapest place I found for the 162, but they appear to be out of stock now (my neighbor wants one). Another place I found was:
http://www.mall24-7.com

My neighbor ended up ordering a Garmin 162 from there for about $6 more than I paid.

www.kmart.com also has some good prices on GPS units.
