What would be the primary differences between these boats and which would you prefer?

The boat would be used at least 90% for fishing only and the rest for cruising or exploring. Would be used inshore . . . probably never more than 10 miles away from land at any given point in time. Almost 100% large lake use. Could see some rough water though (2-4 footers not uncommon).

How would each of these boats handle these types of conditions and how would they contrast each other? It looks to me like the Montauk would have a little more open "basic" layout whereas the Dauntless looks to be a little fancier finishing. What about price, which boat is generally priced higher or are they very similar?

Any of your feedback on the differences between these two models would be great.

I looked at 16 Dauntless before going with the 170. Simply put, the 170 has more room, and is a more stable boat. If you are mostly concerned about fishing (like I was) then go with the 170!

I rode on both before buying the Dauntless. The 170 slammed a bit in 4 foot seas where the Dauntless handled it well. Both can troll easily with 2 adults and bottom fish or cast with 3 people on board. I travel far to fish so the 45 gallon internal tank was a plus. take a ride on both before making a final decision.

Cougar Guy-

If you are truely considering between the two I personally think the 170 is the better choice. Much more room and a lot less frill when it comes time to clean! Have had two older hull Montauks and just order the new 170 over the 18 Dauntless, again a lot less frill and much easier to maintain.

Thanks for the info everyone.

The "simple" layout of the Montauk does appeal to me and it would certainly be nicer when there is mud, blood and fish slime in the interior :)

I'll have a look at both of them but I'm leaning Montauk. From what I understand, it is also lower in price, should use less fuel (smaller engine), belighter for towing and draw less water which is nice for launching . . . seems like the better boat for me at this point in time.

By all means, let me know if my logic is flawed.
