My wife and I are getting ready to purchase a 2003 160 with the standard 90 ELPTO, comfort package and bimini.
Appreciate any thoughts on the following:

1. Fish/Depth Finder: Dealer recommended Lowrance X51 but quoted a price of $489 for part and install. X51 retail is $189. What is a reasonable install charge?

2. Boat Cover: Looking at the Hurricane covers ($240-$433) as opposed to WJM canvas ($740). Boat will be kept in water and shrinkwrapped for winter storage. Does anyone have experience with the Hurricane covers?

3. Bottom Paint: Just to get a feel for pricing on the "add ons" - anyone have an estimate for bottom paint on the new boat?

We really appreciate it!!!!

Crutch,

Fishfinder:
$300 to intall the FF? That sound outrageously high to me. All you need to do is to mount the transducer run the cables and mount the FF - it is very easy. This strikes me as about an hour of shop time (that was how long it took me) - $90 or so. I would get him to throw in the installation. If he doesn't, i would do it myself.

Make sure they mount one of those little transducer mounts on the back of your boat. That way you can tweak the position without drilling more holes in your boat.

On canvas,:
I am a big fan of Mills Canvas. I bought a cover from Boat US that was supposed to fit the Dauntless 15 I have pretty well. It didn't. It also had a 5 year warranty and it lasted 2 years. It cost about what yours did. I am going to buy the mills one anyhow so I pretty much wasted $300.

I bought a console cover from Mills and if fit like a glove. I am going to buy the boat mooring cover next month. i will also have the boat shrink wrapped this winter although I am sure the Mills cover will do just fine.

I think you would be money ahead with Mills. They fit Whalers perfectly - they were made to. I can't comment on Hurricane, but I can vouch for Mills. Basically, I think its a case of you get what you pay for.

Bottom paint:
The yard charges me $400 to paint my 27' sailboat with VC17. I would imagine that even if you are using more expensive paint, it will be less than this by maybe half.

J
