I'm looking for some pre-purchase advice. Is the fishing package worth it? I've read Tabasco's great review on his 2003, so I figure I would upgrade the factory compass. I'm ok without the tackle drawers (although sweet looking). So I'm left with the cooler and rod holders. Based on what I've read here and the obvious lack of storage, I think I want the aftermarket 94 Qt. cooler. So the rod holders, does anyone know of suitable alternatives? I would use them for a couple of bass fishing rods now, and eventually four offshore rods. It doesn't look like the suntop would accomodate the rods. Thanks in advance for the help.

I don't think it is personally. The cooler is an unmarked igloo and a cushion for it in factory trim is less than $100 so maybe $200 total. The rod holders are easily installed or get the rail mount ones for roughly $39 each on either style.

The 170 I use, the rods fit just in front of the sun top. Yes, they do touch the top, but this seems to keep them from bouncing around. They are under a small amount of tension.

Is it just me or as anyone else noticed how uncomfortable the cooler seat is with the rod holders?

Yep, I added two rod holders on the gunnels about a foot forward of the seats. Now I have to find out how the back of the cooler seat is mounted if you do not opt for the fishing package.

Goosedog,

I just picked up an '03 170 Montauk and it came equipped with the fishing package. I think the cooler is nice and the rod holders are okay and both will probably be just as good if I would have installed myself. The big advantage I think is that you can use the boat immediately with the fishing package if you must have a cooler up front and the rod holders are in a bad place which keeps the seat back from allowing the cooler lid to open completely. Short of making all sorts of mods, I'm going to live with the cooler not opening all the way or turn it around as I've read that others have done.

Good luck with your purchase or whatever you decide to do. BTW, I ran across a good deal on an '03 in Indy at Portside Marine but it's a 2 stroke, bimini, fish package, mooring cover and the works for $18,500 and they guy's name is Jim.

Later,

David
