Thanks to everyone who discussed their new 170, I finaly did it. I payed a down payment on a 170 04 Montauk, with a 4-stroke 90 Merc, swim ladder, Whaler suntop, an 04 swing tongue trailer, and a fishing package. Reading posts from JD Montauk, Barney, Maximus, 13Dauntless, BigS and Hollycow made such a difference in my decission and the price I got. The 170 is a low maintanance, no frills, all around boat. It fit in my garage (I measured from the outside of the tiers after moving the fenders closer to the trailer by 4 screws. now it measured 93 inches. The length with the swing tongue swinged back, is 20 foot) Now I need to sell the 13 sport and the Sea Ray!! thanks. Sam.

Welcome to the fun. You’re not going to be able to sleep at night knowing that you have the 170 Montauk in your garage. Good luck.

Don't be afraid to admit you slept in it the first night! Glad to have another 170 in the group. LOL

Sam,

Congrats on your new boat. I'm glad we were able to help you decide. I wish I could've afforded the '04 but I got such a good deal on my '03 that I couldn't pass it up. I assume you'll be running out to Lake Murry very soon, right?

Later,

JD Montauk (David)

Hope you enjoy that new 04 M170. I can't wait to get mine. Let me know how you like the 90 4 stroke as I am leaning that way also.

Hi samwhaler!

I went to a boat show at the Palmetto Expo Center in Greenville, SC last weekend and saw an 04 Montauk on display exactly like the one you described. Great looking boat!! It had been sold before I looked at it on Saturday morning. Was that the boat you bought?

samwhaler,
Let me know how the 170 planes as well as what type of load you had in the boat. I am still undecided on the 4 stroke as I will be pulling a tube or a skier from time to time. I want to know if the boat will get up on plane with 5 or 6 people in the boat. Please update me if you have experienced any of these situations.

Thanks,
Brian

My 03 170 Montauk planes up at dead bottom trim at 2200 RPM with two adults in the boat. I was running my 90 hp 4 stroke in the river up tide at a small sea state.. I cannot wait to get more hours on this boat so I can see what she can do WOT

3500 RPM in out tide on bay I got on plane and decreased rpm to about 3000 by trimming the motor to 1/4 up

man it scoots!!

Robert(traveller), that is the one! I put a down payment before it got to the show in Greenville. It is now at the dealer in Columbia. I am closing on friday. I will take it for a ride that day, it is going to be in the 90's and windy, so we'll see how it will go. I'll use it mostly for striper fishing on lake Murray. I have a lot of ideas about adding a live bait tank, I am not sure which one will work. like I plan to take the front cooler/seat off and tie down a 13 gallon reverse flow live bait tank that will flow in the bilge area. Adding rod holders is a must. The other use will be water skiing, and I am not sure if it is possible to tie the rope to the two cleats each side? I can't wait. sam

Sam, For skiing we use a yoke with a float tied off to the trailer tie downs at the stern for skiing. The 170 is actually easier to ski with than a "ski boat" we had. Jim

13Dauntless, My 170 will plane with 8 aboard. Granted some of us are not heavy, but I've had 6,7 and 8 aboard various weights and close to the weight limit and it's planed no problem with the four stroke every time. I've pulled a skier with 4 people plus the skier. It's quite the multi-use boat. Jim

Be careful, 8 is one too many on a Montauk 170.

Rio, I was wondering if anybody would pick up on that, so there could be a discussion on the capacity plate. Although I as the captain don't like lots of folks onboard, we were still inside the "7 people or 1150lbs" on a short ride. Small people, with 8 life preservers on board. Jim

The gnomes like to run around the deck and turn knobs and things. Makes me nervous.
