I have a 1997 B/W Outrage II with a 115 mercury. With a full tank of gas and 5 adults aboard it is very difficult for the boat to get up on plane. Cruising speed is attained around 4800 rpm and we acheive about 22mph. At lower speeds than 20 mph, the boat will not plane. I am running a 17 pitch aluminum prop. Does anyone know if this performance sounds normal?

Jorge - I have a '96 17 Outrage with a 115 Johnson - you are packing a load - not an excessive load, but with 5 adults and 300 pounds of gas, you are on the heavy side. The boat has a maximum load rating of 1820 pounds. With your 5 adults at what ? 180 pounds, 300 pounds of gas, 300 pound engine, 100 pounds of miscellaneous - you have a load of about 1600 pounds - not far from a max load. As such, it will be difficult to break any speed records.

As far as getting up on plane - moving some of your adults up near or forward of the console will help. Having a couple of heavy adults in the rear quarter seats really puts some weight at the transom.

Realize the boat is rated for 90 HP)min and 150 HP)max - and I think of the 115 as a real good compromise - it gets me and one or two fishing buddies up on plane, moves right along and will idle at about 1.5 - 2.0 mph.

I don't know where you located (elevation wise) or the pitch or condition of your prop and these items also affect performance.

Jimh has a simple calculation that you can use to "evaluate" the performance of your boat/engine - go into the Reference section and you will find the calculator. -------- Jerry/Idaho

Jorge Have a 97 17 outrage with a 130 yamaha with a dolfin on it. Have had 4 adults and two grandkids aboard with full fuel and was a little slow gitting on plane but it did. Remember to put your trim down on starting off to help the engine get the boat up. As soon as the boat gets up you cane bring the motor back up. I do about 40 mph (GPS) wide open. Lots of luck and fun with your rig.

I have a '96 17ft ORII with an Optimax 135. With 2 200 lb plus adults and a full tank, I can plane in about 3 seconds and hold it at around 18-22 mph. Top speed (@ 5400 rpm) is around 48 MPH on the GPS. Cruise is around 34-35 mph at 4400.

Hope the info is helpful.
