Are there any opinions out there as to the best location for 6&1/2" speaker installation on a MT170? I've looked at Tabasco's set up, with the speakers low on the console. Aesthetically, this seems like the best option. The installer who is working on my boat has suggetsed that the speakers should be mounted higher, on the sides of the console. I just don't think the speakers sticking out the sides of the console will look right. As far as acoustics, the higher installation does seem to make some sense.

Tabasco had it right on the money, I did the same thing, two facing aft on the bottom, and two under the rod holders in the front...

Be careful going high with the speakers. The speaker magnets will cause compass deviation.

Jim D is right about the compass- I was about to cut holes in my Dauntless console when I held the speaker in position and spun the compass! Don't know if it will work on a Montauk but I mounted mine below the helm seat (see link in my profile) far away from the compass.

Thanks for the help. I never even considered the compass issue.

The speakers aren't close enough on the Montauk to affect the compass, take it from Tabasco and myself... You won't be disappointed.
