My 21' conquest has a 250 EFI Merc and a 15 hp 2 stroke . Wondering if its worth changing motors to more fuel effecient and cleaner burning ones.If someone has made the change please let me know and which ones to go with? Maybe it would be better to just change the 15 which is used for trolling. It also has its own side mount controls, if i changed brands i would also have to change those.

Last time I did a calculation like that I concluded that even with the savings in operating cost, I could not do enough boating in my lifetime with the more fuel efficient motor to recapture the difference in price the manufacturers charge for the more fuel efficient motor. Practically speaking, it would be best to consider making that change when the 250 EFI has a catastrophic failure.

Thanks for the reply and yes i also did some calculations and decided to just change the trolling motor. I would like to get one that has power tilt or possibly a power motor mount. Also wondering what size to get? Maybe a 9.9 Hi Thrust.

Even though a 4-stroke kicker would get better milage than your current 2-stroke, the total amount of fuel burned probably wouldn't justify the cost. I have a Mercury 15 hp 2-stroke for a trolling motor on my Outrage 22 Cuddy, and it's a great little motor with only one fault: it can be pretty smokey when there is no breeze. Other than that it's flawless. I use an autoblend unit so I don't have to have a seperate fuel tank, which keeps the deck uncluttered.
Regarding the 250 EFI, I understand that's a pretty fuel efficient motor as 2-strokes go, and you'd be way behind financially if you swapped it out. Those that have the Merc EFIs on this forum seem to love 'em. Overall, I think you have a really nice rig, and it sounds like (from your other thread) you got it at a very good price. It's too bad Whaler discontinued the 21 Conquests, since they no longer offer an easily trailerable cuddy.

Yes the smoke is really the only complaint i have about the 15 merc. I fish offshore and have some people get sick from the fumes. I also have the auto-blend,its located in the motor well compartment. I did find some pretty good deals on motors ( boat motors .com ). Hey Thanks this is a fun forum!
