Author Topic:   Montauk 170 options

Hi everyone:

I'm new to this site and I have just ordered a new Montauk.
I would like some advice.

1) Does anyone recommend the Pate 24 or 27 gas tank?
2) Has anyone installed a trolling motor? If so, did you remove the bow rail? If you left the bow rail on, which bow mount trolling motor did you use?
3) I'm thinking of getting a Mills mooring cover. Any other options other than Mills? (Mills has mooring covers for Montauks with and without bow rails.)
4) The dealer will install a bow pedestal seat for around $360. Has anyone installed one?

Thanks for any advice.

Welcome to continuousWave, WT!

Here's the page in the Reference section on the 170:

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/170Montauk/

Heres a coupla member's 170s so equipped in the Cetecea section:

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/cetacea/cetaceaPage58.html

If you click on the search button above, and search for

"170" AND "Pate" you should find some relevant messages.

You can also go to the top of the "Post Classics" forum and select to view messages from the last two years. Then you can use IE's "Find on this page" under the Edit menu to look for topics on the 170, trolling motor, etc.

There are also many topics about the 170 in the Classic Whaler: General and Classic Whaler: Performance forums.

Hope this helps,

Oh yeah. Here's Barney's web page about his 170 with Mills bimini and mooring cover:

http://myweb.cableone.net/barney9014

Here's a recent thread where the mooring cover was discussed:

Another member here has the mooring cover from iboats.com on his 150 and 170 boats. Instead of mounting hooks beneath the rub rails, it has straps that go down to the trailer. He loves his.

Hello WT, welcome to the forum.

Conrad's on the purchase of your new 170 Montauk. You are going to be very pleased with her.

Marsh should be able to help you out with the bow mounted trolling motor. He is in the process of installing one at the moment.

I'm very interested in the bow pedestal seat that you will have installed. Please post some pictures when you get the chance.

Moe, I think Jimh will have to update the 170 Montauk reference page when he has some time. There are a couple of changes since it was introduced. The Mills canvas package is now available and I believe the package deal now contains a Karavan trailer and not the EZ-loader.

Regards,

Erik

Sorry, it should have been "congrad's" instead of "conrad's".

The Cetecea page shows the new Karavan trailer, but not the Reference page.

I was totally unaware a full canvas package was available from Mills through Whaler!

The Reference page also still has the introductory pricing on the 170.

4Runner also has a trolling motor in this thread:

Let me also point out, WT, that you can click on the icon at the top of Erik's post, the one that looks like a face and question mark, to see Erik's profile. If you click on his homepage link, you can see his pictures of his 170 fishing machine.
