I currently own a "87 22' Outrage and have started thinking about downsizing to a smaller boat with shallow draft. Last week I visited a Whaler dealer for my first look at the new Montauk. I was impressed with the amount of room in the boat. What year did Whaler change to the new hull? Thanks.

I'm sure you'll get a lot more detailed information from others on this site, but I believe the change occured in 2002. Check out page 58 on Cetacea.

I believe that's correct. The classic 17 Montauk was also sold at the beginning of the 2002 model year before the new hull was announced mid-model year, and from what I hear, it was named 170 also.

Boston Whaler debuted their new 2002 170-MONTAUK model to visitors to the Miami Boat show on February 14, 2002.

ContinuousWave introduced the boat to the rest of the planet on February 21, 2002. We drove customers to the dealership before the dealers had even heard of it!

Please read the Reference article

and the Cetacea article:

for more information about the 170 MONTAUK.
