I don't have a 170 MT, but have been reading with interest all the good info posted here about those boats. I used outriggers on my old Katama and now on my Conquest. I just wondered if anyone has installed outriggers on their 170 MT. What type holders (wishbone, surface mount, etc.) were used, how were they mounted, where were they mounted, and how have they worked? Pictures would be great. Thanks.

Hi, HawaiianWhaler
Yes, I have installed outriggers in my Montauk. I bought the surface mount type and did mount them on a piece of 6061 aluminum plate, then I used a rod holder type clamp and bolted it in the center of the plate using an Allen flat screw countersunk so will allow me to combine the angle between the upward railing and gunnel until it rested flat after that I pinned it so it will no lose its position under pressure. This mounting system will allow you to mount them in the console railings if you would like to. I have installed a Scotty swivel manual downrigger by drilling and tapping into the phenolic but without using their standard base I designed a mounting pvc plate to accept their bolt pattern but at the same time allowing me to tap five times into the gunnel. I made a storage compartment under the rps after seeing George Gefty's pioneer design. I am in the process of installing a 17 gls Kodiak livewell and painting the bottom to get in the water by April 15 so forgive me for not answering sooner tbere are other ideas I am working on. I will post photos in detail of all my modifications.

Thanks very much for the reply. I was beginning to think that none of the good folks on this forum used outriggers on their 170MTs. Out here on the windy rough ocean, outriggers are nearly indispensable for keeping our lines from tangling, not to mention providing dropback for a better hookup.

I remember years (decades?) ago when BW offered an outrigger holder that was mounted to the T-intersection of the center console rail and the short curved rail going forward on the classic MTs, similar to the rail the 170MTs now have. That outrigger holder was a custom Lee's design that was also used on the Outrages back then.

But that was then, and this is now. The CC rail is not the same, and BW doesn't seem to offer any outrigger options for the 170MT, so innovative 170MT owners such as yourself must come up with their own designs. Hope you do get in the water by your April 15th target date (and finish your taxes too ;)). Please do post pictures of your outrigger setup when you can.
