Anyone out there using a non-marine stereo in their center console Whaler? I saw at least one page on Cetacea of a 170 Montauk with a Blaupunkt stereo with just a splash cover over it. As far as I know Balupunkt doesn’t make “marine” stereos. Additionally, most of the flashy bowriders that you see at the boat shows come with a stereo housed inside a kind of glove compartment but do not advertise them as “marine” stereos. I can see the need for marine speakers because they need to be exposed and the cones on regular speakers would deteriorate quickly. However, marine stereos seem expensive and lack the features of some of the car units and I don't know how waterproof they really are. Also I like Blaupunkt radios because they have powerful FM receivers and sound really sweet.

I had a $20 cheapo am/fm cassette car stereo inside the console of my 1990 Montauk. In that console, there was a door into the console on the front of the console at about knee height. The guy I bought the montauk from had built some shelves in there to hold the VHF and radio and two small speakers. It worked just fine for years until I swamped the boat one day and the stereo spent some time submerged in salt water; for some reason, it didn't work after that. So I bought another $14.99 am/fm cassette car radio, and installed some car speakers I had lying around, and was back in business again. You can buy a whole lot of cheap radios for the price of one "marine" unit. I don't think a marine unit would have lasted for long even if it had survived being submerged in salt water.
