I just saw a 2001 Dauntless 180 that was flawless with the exception of no seat across (in front of) the transom. I've seen a few Dauntlesses (Dautli?) and have never come across one without a stern seat.

Since I absolutely require the seat, I passed on the boat until I can find out more.

First, is this a factory delete option? If so, how hard is it to replace it and can anyone give me a ballpark figure on the cost of the seat and backrests?

Thanks in advance,

The seat should still be available from BW. Call your local dealer for a price.

I thought the 180 had the flip down stern seat. Is it possible that it was just folded down?

I believe the full width stern seat with fold down backrest is standard on the 2002 models and up. The stern seat and backrests were an option in the 2001 models as far as I know.

It absolutely wasn't there. I'm not sure when the flip-down seat was added. Was it 2001 or later?

I recall seeing a flip-down seat in a current boat and it looked like part of it was molded into the transom which would make retro-fitting impossible. I can't recall how the older seats worked.

On the 2001 model the seat snappes into place and the backrests slide into the holes that are forseen and standard on all 180 Dauntless models.

If you look at the data in the Catalog CD-Rom for the 2001 model you will see that the seat and backrests were optional.

Contact Tom W. Clark for info about obtaining this wonderful source of information.

As erik says, the seat on the Dauntless 18 was optional. As a matter of fact, the 2000 brochure that I have says:

"Select the available stern bench seat for additional seating and wakeboard or gear storage. You can take out the stern seat and use it for a sturdy dock box until you need the extra seating again."

I'm sure it's still available from a BW idea of the cost, but I'm sure it's not cheap. Maybe you could investigate other options like large coolers with seat pads on top, or a custom built alternative.

You could order the seat backs from BW and use a large (ie REAL BIG) cooler across the back for seating. When I was looking at used Dauntlesses, I found one that had the seat, but not the backrests. They were a couple hundred apiece from BW IIRC. I am sure you could get some custom ones made up without too much trouble and most likely less $$$, but I understand wanting it all factory. The rear seating is a huge advantage in the Dauntless over almost everything else BW sells in the 18-22 foot range. It was the only CC I could easily get the whole family in.

You could put two 72qt Igloo coolers (with factory Whaler cushions since this is the Montauk sized cooler) back there with a Thetford 775 Porta-Potti between them. They'd all be about 16.5" tall.

That sounds like a great idea Moe !

I believe the rear box with pad and seat backs runs in the $2,000+ range. (Also, I know each seat-back runs over $500 individually). I would think Birdsall or someone would also make it, though for probably not much less.

The Boston Whaler stern seat is $3,810 CDN. That's about $2,600 USD. Holy smokes! This is a hinged fibreglas box with a padded top! I can buy a decent used car for that money.
