I am ready to upgrade my 90 HP 2 stroke on my 170 Montauk to a stainless prop. The engine came with a standard aluminum 12and3/4 by 21 pitch prop.

It has been a great performer and I do pull 200 pound skiers. Max rpm has not been over 5100 RPM at WOT. Top speed has been aroun 42 mph.

Please help! Which stainless have you guys used on this engine?

I hear the Laser II is a good one.

Ineed help with price and where to get the best price. Getting installed here is no problem.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

1st...mercury has new packaging out on their black max...mercury props....on the box is an easy reference guide that list all mercury props...their primary uses and which motors they are designed for.

when you go by your b/w dealer check it out.

2cd...are you the owner of an late model montauk 170...if so, and you have the factory 21p prop,,,,if your engine is rigged and adjusted properly...you will have quite a higher wot [wide open throttle]...if it is new...take it back to your dealer....and be sure to ask them why?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

An aluminum prop is the lowest standard of performance. My hunch is that the reason it comes on the 90 2-stroke is because of price. They are the "el cheapos" of the propeller world, except for that composite junk.

If skiing is important to you, you want a HIGH FIVE prop, in 20" pitch, with engine set in the middle set of mounting holes. These things are a work of art, give turbine SMOOOOOTH pulling power like you have never seen, and are still faster top end than a 3 bladed aluminum. If top speed is your interest, get the 20" Laser II instead. Both will give good bow lift, decreasing resistance and increasing hull ride. They cost about $400 each, and worth every penny of it, and should give you speeds between 43-45 mph. Remember, this is about a 100 HP engine

PS For the best pricing on Mercury props, e-mail offshoreperformance.com or kenyonpowerboats.com. Both are in the low price boating capital of the world, FL, and ship tax free.

Many thanks LHG! I odered a laserII prop from offshore performance.com They were very helpful and I saved 140.00 off of retail price.

This website is always a great help to us Whaler owners!

I will report later on the performance.
