I am adding a partial fishing package to my 2003 Montauk 170. The parts that I purchased from Whaler are the rod holders, back cushion, ice chest cushion, and ice chest tie downs. I did not buy the 72 qt ice chest because I can get a cheaper 72 qt after market. However after looking at pictures of the Whaler ice chest on pictures posted on this web site, the Whaler chest seems top quality and possible worth the extra $90. Anyone familar with this set up and any comments as to what to purchase? I am also thinking the cushion would fit better on the Whaler igloo.

I'm not familiar with the Whaler ice chest but I'm betting it's just an igloo marine ( which have really come down in price the last few years). No way would I spend an extra $90 on a 72 qt chest just because it was from Whaler. A 72 qt chest shouldn't cost $90 in the first place. Just go to Academy and get one . It will be just as good and a lot cheaper. Plus, you can get an igloo cushion for it for around $18.
While you're there pick up a gallon of the Quicksilver oil that they just lowered the price on to $9.93 a gallon. That is unless you have a 4 stroke.

Whaler just uses the 72-quart Igloo marine cooler on the 170 and you can install snaps for the cushion on its lid. The cushion should fit just fine.

Can you tell me if there is any indication of the manufacture on the rod racks or it packaging?

Since I use the cooler as my fish box, I replaced the cooler that came with my fishing package with a 120 qt.
I did not bother with a cushion on the cooler.

Meb:

Can you post the prices and part numbers for the rod holder/backrest, cushion and cooler tiedown? Also, is this the '04 style tiedown that mounts on the front of the console or is this the older style that mounts on the floor? I asked the dealer for a price and they quoted something like $400 but they weren't even sure if this was just the cooler and tiedown or if it also included the backrest. It sounds to me like this is the price of the entire fishing package. There are no part numbers in www.whalerparts.com for the '04 tie downs.

I looked at the new tie downs at the dealer and it looks real simple. I tried to cut a piece of 1/2 red oak that I had in the shape of the "clamp" that holds the back of the cooler but didn't get the curve right. I'll make a better template when I have more time and try again. I think that King Starboard may be a better material for this but it is too expensive to experiment. I may just build a prototype out of wood first. The backrest shouldn't be too hard to do either.

I agree that the Igloo cooler from Whaler is armed robbery. Mine cost $50 bucks and I got the cushion free. Even by just tying it to the console with bungees it remains pretty much in place but the wife conplains that the lack on a backrest makes it uncomfortable in chop.

thanks,
Imanuel

in March I received these prices:

77.00 for the rod rack.

119.00 for the cushion.

The rod rack and back cushion is $138, the rod rack by alone is $65, the seat (igloo) cushion is $110.50, and my wife ordered the tie downs and I do not have the price. I did check on the 03 design compared to the 04 design on the tie downs and the dealer stated the 04 design required fiberglass work of some sort so I got the 03 tie downs.

Can you name the dealer where you bought the parts?

Meeks Marine in Kemah, Texas. I purchased the Montauk there. They are a good dealership and quite helpful with information.

Ghefty,
Did you have have to replace your cooler cleats when you upgraded to a bigger cooler or was the width the same?

Guys, I would look around before I paid those prices from Boston Whaler. $110.50 for a cooler cushion ? Most of this stuff is the same thing you can buy at your local boating
or sporting goods store for a fraction of the price. I would for sure check locally before I put out that kind of cash.

It is a very good boat for the bay. I keep it over the water at Sea Isle in West Galveston. I have found Meeks to be a good dealership.
