Can anyone comment on how good the 2 stroke 90 is and fuel consumption vs. 4 stroke…Also, has anyone skied on a 4 stroke, I’m concerned about hole shot performance….I know what the stats say, I’m looking for real world opinion from someone who has sat behind one on a skis and said “HIT IT”….

The 4 stroke advantage is:

Quieter
Cleaner
Slightly better economy
Better suited to low speed use (trolling)

2 stroke advantage
Cheaper maintenance (no oil changes)
Better torque (hole shot)

If you value the lower noise and will use the motor for trolling, I'd go the 4 stroke. The fuel economy advantages will rarely compensate for the additional cost during the life of the motor. Also, if you will be operating the boat in environmentally restricted waters, you may have no option but the 4 stroke.

Some DFI 2 strokes can come close to the 4's in fuel economy and clean operation (Mercury's Opti 135 comes to mind), but are not as quiet as the 4's.

Is the 4 stroke worth an extra $2,800?

I've got one. and I would say HECK NO!!!!!!

Get the two stroke, and keep the cash.

Guess I've got buyer's remorse. The Whaler is a good boat, but it's really underpowered. There are many, many good boats out there, many with better warranties (Sea Ray's is lifetime). If I had it to do over, I would not even buy a Whaler.

But, what's done is done. If I sold it now, I'd taking a severe hair cut. May sell it anyway...look for it in classifieds.

You've asked has anyone skied with a 170 Montauk 90HP 4-Stroke. Yes I have and it does fine. JimB

And many boats have a 5 years or less warrenty. Some of the guys in the forum elected to put on a bigger motor. If you like the boat, just sell your 90 hp 4 stroke and get a larger motor.

I see you researched the 170 montauk for a while from all your old post. So you had your eyes wide open when you bought that boat.
