In the latest episode of “Ship Shape Boating” (airing on DIY network this week), John installed a stereo system on an ’03 Nantucket. He installed 6” x 9” speakers on the motor well bulkhead facing the leaning post. I have never seen this setup but it seems that it may be a better location than the back of the console in terms of allowing the driver to hear while underway. John kind of glossed over the part where the cables are fished back to the console.

Has anybody tried this? What are the advantages of this setup? How hard was it to fish the cables back to the console? Will this work on other “neo-classics” such as 170 Montauk. Just curious…

No Way!! I dont think I would cut any holes like that in an area that that may see alot of water, whether it be from hard backing-down or from water activites that could bring water into that area.I would find a way to put speakers somewhere else...ANYWHERE else .
Just my thoughts, but in the end its your boat.

the problem is the access to the void portside.
starboard there is an access port that can be retro fitted with I believe 6 1/2" speakers....there is a way to do it...but I am not ready to explain....there is alot of work involved..once I finish mine..I'll post and tell the way..I have already cut the transom on a 170 to accomodate a 8hp kicker motor without using a bracket...IT came out really clean!
