posted on here before and sincerely appreciate all feedback i had recieved / well back in shop again as of 6/13 same old problem-low rpm motor seems to run rough/ new spark plugs installed on 6/7-ran out on flat lake erie at 4000 rpm for a couple hours but when powered down to low speed(idle) c.700 rpm motor seemed to run rough/ i don't know what a good 2 stroke plug should look like but upon inspection seemed fouled to me/ also excessive oil consumption/ new iridium plugs installed by the way/ contacted merc and back to dealer as i said/ seems like spinning wheels all over again/ does anybody have a good story on this 99 optimax/ i seem to have a lemon

in earnest,

There was a problem with a version of the Opti Engine control computer version around that 1999 timeframe where the engine got stuck in break in mode and was feeding double oile. The dealers should have a service bulleting stating how to resolve it. You can also force the motor back into breakin mode accidently by executing the procedure to prime the oiling system. BillS

If you're not using optimax oil, I'd try that as well. I didn't have plug fouling problems as severe as yours, but since I started using exclusively optimax oil (I had been using "Quiksilver Premium) I have virtually no fouling problems, even with extended idling/trolling.

I have a 97 OR II 17 with the 98 Opti 135. It's been working well for me in the 2 seasons I had it. I use bulk Optimax DFI oil and have had no issues with it. I find it a strong performer with excellend economy. It runs rougher than most 4 strokes at idle, but I've had no performance problems and I run 1-2 miles at 1000rpm through no wake zons to get to SF bay from my marina. Keep at it. I suspect the break-in issue raised by bsmotril may be a cause.

I have only had my 1998 Opti 135 for a few months, but it has been nothing but good during that time. No oil burn, no rough idle, lot's of power/speed. And, like above, I have to run about a mile and a half to get in and out of no wake zones (I cheat a bit and go around 1,100).

BTW, I also use Optimax oil exclusively
