Can anyone out there give me the approximate towing weight of an Outrage II 17 with an Optimax 135? I can add up the parts: boat-1700, engine-431 (dry), trailer-780. That puts the boat dry with no rigging around 3000 lbs. Will an SUV with a rated 5000 lb towing capacity be sufficient if I ever wanted to tow the boat.

Paul,
I think you are very close with the tow weight. That is what I got when I weighted my rig on a certified scale. I tow my Outrage II with a Toyota Tacoma double cab with the max towing capacity of 5000 pounds. It seems to do a good job, but it feels a little small and I seldom go more than 60 mph and try to give myself lots of room to stop. I am taking my boat to Mexico in two weeks and I am planning to tow with an empty fuel tank and fill up close to Bahia De Los Angeles. Three thousand pounds seems to be a safe weight on a vehicle that is suppose to tow up to five thousand pounds. Of course, I would rather tow with a larger rig, but I like getting twenty miles to the gallon with a four-wheel drive when I am not towing.
Take care,Bob

Thanks, Bob. Post some pictures of the Baja trip. I thing the other NorCal owners would like to see them.

I have a Johnson 115 on mine and tow with a 1997 toyota 4 runner with 5,000lbs of towing capacity and it handles it fine. Have a good 4th.

Whaler advertized the boat weight at 1900 lbs.

In general, the rated towing capacity for a vehicle is figured with the vehicle in its lightest possible configuration. Anything added to the vehicle counts against the towing capacity. That includes:

--fuel
--passengers
--any optional equipment

For example, if you order your vehicle with the optional roof rack that weighs ten pounds, that reduces the towing rating by ten pounds. If you put a wife and two kids in the car, their weigh reduces the towing capacity.

For this reason, it is prudent to figure that a vehicle which is rated for, say, 5,000 pounds of towing capacity, can only tow a boat/motor/trailer load of around 4,000 pounds maximum under normal circumstances.
