'04 Console-Mounted Cooler Cleat Height

I installed the ’04 style cooler cleat that mounts to the console yesterday. I have an Igloo 72 qt. cooler and cushion that I bought separately (i.e. not from Whaler). I am very happy with the way it turned out but it will not fold back all the way since it hits the floor. If I had mounted it any lower, the radius on the cleat would not conform to any of the “grooves” on the cooler. I looked at some of the boats on the dealer’s lot earlier this week and remember that the coolers that came with them looked pretty small but I don’t remember what size cooler came with the Montauk’s fishing package. I suspect that the cleat is made to fit more than one cooler and just needs to be installed higher or lower so it hits a different “groove” on the cooler. Could anybody that has the fishing package on an ’04 Montauk tell me what size cooler you have and how high the cleat is mounted?
BTW: Someone reported in a previous thread that the dealer told them that the ’04 cooler cleat required some fiberglass work. This is not so. The cleat bolts on to the front on the console with 4 bolts. I also used a sealant/adhesive to make sure it was sealed properly. The only problem that I had is that some of the bolts were a little bit too short but I didn’t realize until after I had smeared sealant over the whole thing and the hardware store was closed. I had to come back and clean the whole thing the next day.

I'm not sure what the height is (maybe 8"?) but the cooler is a 72 quart.

I just measured the height and it's 5-1/2" from the deck to the bottom of the bracket. The material is 3/4" thick. It does set right into the groove of the 72 quart cooler.

Thanks for the info. Mine is certainly lower than that, but I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't conform to any other groove on the cooler. Maybe they sent me the wrong part. It's no big deal I will probably never go out without the cooler.

Can anyone clarify if the cooler that comes w/ the 04 montauk is for sure the Igloo "Marine" 72qt coolers or is it custom made by igloo for whaler?
I am purchasing the '04 cooler bracket, cushion, rod holders, and seatback cushion from Whalertowne and the 72qt igloo "marine" cooler separately online. I would like to make sure this cooler fits as intended by whaler, esp. after reading this post about the grooves and the particular height of the mounting bracket.
Thanks in advance.

I could be wrong, but I believe Igloo has, fairly recently, changed the 72-quart cooler that you buy from non-Whaler sources, and upgraded it to a "5-day" model. It may not fit the 72-quart bracket from Whaler. I don't know if Whaler will have to come up with a new bracket, or if Igloo is still making the original 72-quart marine cooler for them.

Have you considered mounting it so that is swings up?
Photos would hep.

I just received my '04 BW cooler mount and tried a mock install. I noticed the following on my 72 qt marine cooler. From the bottom of the cooler up, there's a groove that starts at 3 1/2 up to 4". The second groove starts at 6 1/8 and ends at 6 5/8. The cooler mount is 3/4" thick and doesn't fit snuggly into the second groove, which is where I've noticed the members' boats have shown.
Can anyone tell me how the grooves are set on your 72qt coolers?
Divedog mentioned 5 1/2" from the bottom for his mount. That wouldn't fit my cooler...

just wanted to throw in a follow up to my cooler seat self install and a recommendation to Chesapeake Whalertowne. Like Camuyano I opted to install the cooler parts after receiving my new '04 170. Scott from the parts dept got the parts to me, w/ little effort on my part, in less than two weeks w/ a very minimal shipping cost of $40. In all, I received the cooler seat cushion, backrest cushion, rod holders, cooler mounting bracket, and all fittings. Installation of the rod holders and backrest cushion was a snap. The 72qt igloo was purchased at westmarine and installing the cushion on it was cake as well. However, I still have yet to install the cooler bracket since it does not fit into the top groove of the cooler nicely. It does fit on one of the bottom grooves quite nicely, however, as Camuyano mentioned, the bracket does not fold down all the way as it does stock. Also, with the bracket way down there, the bungee does not quite reach the cooler loop. I am betting Moe is right about the cooler being a little different now. For now, the cooler is unmounted, but cushioned. Surprisingly it is quite stable sat on even in 4' chop.
