I am considering putting a trolling plate on my motor and am seeking opinions/experience of forum members. There seem to be three types of plates:

1. A spring loaded plate that you put in position with a cord. A shear pin protects when you fail to put the plate in the proper position at higer than trolling speeds.

2. An automatic plate that move up and down according to speed.

3. A plate that combines the trolling plate with a hydro-stabilizer.

Any input or experiences would be appreciated.

I would avoid all the previously mentioned and buy a trolling/drift sock. I have a Happy Troller, the spring loaded plate variety, which works very well at slowing a boat to trolling speed, however, if you plan on selling your boat the trolling plates will affect re-sale value.
The other benefit with socks is that you can use 1 or two at a time to control your troll speed. This is not an option with the Happy Troller.

Just my two thoughts.
