Hello, Newbie here. I purchased a 28 Conquest w/225 Evinrudes on it. My Outrage got a bit small for wifee and the kids. We still have the 20 ft Outrage , just handed it down to my sons.

What kind of engines are used on a CONQUEST 28?

What boat speed is possible?

What is the reliability of different engines?

I have 225-HP Evinrude engines. After getting a few bugs out of them I've decided that they are good but also a bit too loud.

We were thinking about putting a set of 225 or 250 4-stroke Yamahas on the boat, but we are undecided about foreign-made engines. The new Verado engines look great. They are still a bit on the new side, maybe more interested when they work out any problems that usually pop up after a new series of engines are put on the market.

Got a 2000 Conquest 23 with the Diesel I/O engine (Mercruiser 4.2L D-Tronic 250HP with Bravo 3 leg). Very happy with the boat. She's based in Cornwall in the UK which is a peninsula sticking right out in the Atlantic - we get some big seas and I can honestly say that the family have always felt safe (well nearly!). The only occasion we've ever even got wet was running 90 degrees across a wind against swell at the mouth of an estuary - and even then it was only the wife in the back!

I guess a Diesel is unusual on the wrong side of the Atlantic but the fuel economy is awesome. Diesel is about 40p (70c) as opposed to £1 ($1.80) - that's a litre!! It's very noisy at low speeds but at WOT it's much more pleasant than a shrieking 2-stroke and seems happy to run flat out all the time.

I have a pair of Yamaha 200 HPDI's on my 03 255 Conquest. The 4 strokers F225's would be a good match for you, if you're willing to shell out the money.

How are the F250's? The 28 can use the extra power , also I like to pull the throttle back while cruising.
Is there a comparison or review of these engines in a boating magazine ?

Since whaler used Yam/Merc 225's on the 02/03 Conquests, you should try Whaler for a comparison.

I wish I had the Diesel.

A Diesel Conquest sure sounds nice. I didn't know that B/W made such a machine.

We looked on the Whaler site about the 2 and 4 strokes . And the biggest difference looks to be in noise reduction. Which is great.
Now a friend just bought a [Bombardier Recreational Products E-TEC™] for his [Boston Whaler]. The [Bombardier Recreational Products E-TEC™] is so quiet , the boat is on plane and comfortable at 3k RPM. Not even to mention how little gas it uses. This brings another engine into the mix.

They don't make the I/O option anymore - it was just done for Europe and I belive ultimately the revenue didn't justify the cost.

Diesel is the incumbent preferred power option in Europe over about 20' - the only debate is about 4-strokes. Big 2 strokes are increasingly very rare.

Though the meddling European bureaucrats are trying hard to remove the 'tax free' status on marine diesel which will certainly swing the argument more towards 4-stokes.

The VERADO engines are now in their sixth month of production. I do not recall hearing of any problems with them. The availability of a Verado engine for re-power application seems to be very limited at the moment, as virtually all of them are being used in new boat production by boat builders with strong partnership with Mercury.

Before a dealer can install a Verado engine in a re-power situation, his technicians have to qualify via completion of several training courses to become certified for the new technology of the engine. This may also hold back the availability of the Verado for re-powering applications.

Because the Verado exclusively uses the DTS fly-by-wire technology, a repower to a Verado would require a steering and motor control de-rigging and rigging expense (reduced in the case of repowering from Optimax DTS) in addition to the higher cost of the Verado. On a Whaler factory equipped with Mercurys, much of that finely crafted and paid for Whaler factory rigging expertise would have to be put in the trash can and the repowerer would have to subject their beloved boat to the horror of dealer rigging not controlled directly by the factory. Based on previous discusions here, it seems the thought of that alone might be enough to scare most away from repowering with the Verado.

Generally, the heavy weight, the complete derigging/rigging requirement and the expense of training for the new technology of the Verado means that the Verado has a much higher barrier to entry into the repower market than is the case for other motors. With the higher barrier, I suspect that there will be very limited Verado activity in the repower market.

We are very satisfied with Mercury/Yamaha efi 225 4-strokes on our 305 Conquest. They are extremely quiet, have a good reputation for reliability and give good performance and fuel economy on a 32 loa boat, 6 ton boat. They should give even better performance on a smaller Conquest.

What year 225 Merc/Yamaha's do you have hamden ? My boat is the 28 Conquest it looks the same boat as the 305. With the 225 Evinrudes fuel use seems to be OK but IMO the engines are a bit loud. The Conquest's top speed is 42.+ mph on the GPS but requires quite a bit of trim even at cruising speeds. The 4 stroke Yamahas look look the way to go but the new Evinrude's have some interesting features in them. The Ficht's that are currently on the boat are pretty good. I've been told by some that they are alot of trouble. They have proven quite a bit different in my experience's. Just a bit too loud.

My initials are F.U. and a junior on top of that. Hence the FU2. Dad is F.U 1.....my son is F.U 3.

FU2, your Fichts are pretty quiet by 2-stroke standards except, perhaps, at idle. If you are finding them a little noisier or less smooth than usual, check the gap on your plugs and regap to 0.030. The engines get a little raspy as compared to their very smooth nature when the gap gets into the 0.050 neighborhood.

The 28 Conquest needs the engines tilted way out. Can anyone tell me if there engines are mounted flat on the transom or one bolt hole up ? Also prop size ? The props seem OK . The hole shot is excellent , and the rpms are right at 5700 on top. Maybe because the boat is so heavy it needs the engines tilted so far out ?

The engines on my 305 Conquest are 2004 model Mercury/Yamaha 4-stroke efi.
Since Mercury and Yamaha have obtained a "divorce", this engine may not be available. However, it is exactly the same engine as a 225 Yamaha efi 4-stroke. It is a great engine, the biggest problem is expense.
The hull of the 305 Conquest is a different design than 28-29 Conquest, the former hull runs the full length of the boat and the boat runs best with the engines trimmed all the way in. The boat runs flat without trim tab application and passengers can walk around without affecting trim. It is very smooth and will plane easily at 14 knots. The 305 is bigger and heavier. Since the 225's give good performance on the 305, they should do a bit better on a 29-29.
My engines came standard with the Mirage 4-blade props. These are great and almost impossible to get to cavitate.

WOT RPM range for the Ficht is 5500 to 6000. You should be propped to achieve 5750 RPM or higher as you are normally loaded.

In your case, ideal propeller pitch is unlikely to be higher than 17 inches. For reference purposes, my 225 Fichts turn a pair of Mercury Mirage 15 1/2 x 17P on a 27 Whaler with Whaler Drive to 5700 RPM fully loaded with 300 gallons of fuel. When lightly loaded, revs are near 6000. Normally loaded typically is carrying between 100 to 225 gallons of fuel in my case. I only carry a full belly when going off shore or on long coastal trip.
