I have a [2004 MONTAUK 170] with 90-HP 4-stroke that has been stowed in the garage for the last 9 weeks. I know that sounds pathetic, but my wife and I had to postpone boating for the birth of our daughter 6 weeks ago. I have fuel in the tanks, and also didn't run the fuel lines dry.

Is it worth adding fuel stabilizer at this point, or should I discard the fuel? How can carburetor damage from fuel in the motor for 2- months be prevented?.

Nine-week- old fuel is not all that bad. If you can, run the fuel out of the carbs and use some fogging oil to keep rust off the cylinder walls. It won't hurt to put some fuel stabilizer in the tank, but you'll need to mix it in by adding more fuel or shaking up your tanks. Congrats on your new addition!

I would not consider fuel that is just two months old to be "old" fuel. However, modern fuel formulations do seem to be less stable than pure gasoline.

Your 170 MONTAUK probably has portable tanks, perhaps the 6-gallon size, so it would not be a great problem to pour off the fuel for use elsewhere, such as in a lawnmower or perhaps an older car. Replace the boat fuel with some fresh gasoline, add fuel stabilizer, and run the engine for 30 minutes so that the new fuel is certain to have reached the carburetors.

Consult your owner's manual for advice on how to prepare the engine for periods of non-use. Advice seems to vary on how to handle the question of fuel in the carburetor bowls. I would follow the manufacturer's recommendations, and often these days they do not recommend running the engine out of fuel for storage.

Jim is right about checking the manual before running the carbs dry. I am thinking of old school advice, and the technology has changed. If the manual does not recommend running the carbs dry, I would replace the fuel in the tank with fresh fuel and add a stablizer, and then run the engine long enough to burn off the old unstabilized fuel and draw in the new stablized fuel.

You didn't mention if you are preparing for winter storage or just worried about running with the gas you have. If you are continuing the boating season then add stabalizer and don't worry about it. In fact, I always add stabalizer to my gas to keep the carbs gum free. If you are preparing for storage then I would use the gas elswhere as Jim suggested and refil the tanks with new gas and stabalizer. Nine week old gas should not be a problem at all.

Thanks for all the great advice. I'll have her back on the water in a couple of weeks. I'll add some fresh gas and stabilizer to the tanks (they are only about half full). Hopefully I'll never have to watch that little boat just sit there in the future. Kind of heartbreaking, you know. Thanks again.

Gar- You can't have that much "old" gas. Dump it into gas containers and use it in your B+S lawnmower. It'll run sweet. Refuel the Whaler. If the gas bothers you... .02 David

Two products can help, PRI-G for most every problem even with your car. A new product from Star Brite called Startron, uses enzemes to keep fuel fresh and restore old fuel and keep carbon under control in the combustion chamber. If this product does what it says we will all be using it. Both are reasonably priced.

My 18 Outrage hasn't been run in 10 weeks, and has about 50 gal in the tank. Next time I take it out, I won't even think about age of the gasoline. I'll just turn the keys, and crank up the Merc 115's, and they will run just fine.

I think all this talk about gasoline being less than 2 years old is not necessary. It will work fine.

With all these damn Hurricanes.. it will be 9 weeks before I run my Boat as well,,, but,, I did have my two 6 gallon tanks outta my Montauk to use for my generator... country boy can survive
