Finally got out in the new Montauk. The launch was nice, except I forgot to unhook the safety chain. No big deal. My first attempts at shifting were a little clunky, but I can see getting used to it pretty quick. I have the '05 (built in '04) 90 horse EFI Four-stroke. What a breeze to start. Last motor was an '86 Johnson 90. What a difference!! Keeping the new Merc under 3500 rpm for the first hour was a pain, but my trusty wife ;) kept an eye on the tach for me. ( My ribs are sore.) The handling was pretty nice, but I was surprised that I had to reach about 3100 rpm's before she would totally plane. I probably have to get used to trimming this new boat. We did get a little wet, but it eventually blew 20 knots. The retrieval of the boat went perfectly, but I put on my waders. The rear wheels were just touching the water, the bunks were 6" out of the water, the boat floated to within a foot of the post, then the bunks landed perfectly outside the strakes when I pulled up. Here's hoping more launches go that way. (Weymouth Back River.) First day's rating for the Montauk - A+ .

P.S. I'm finding it hard to pick a name for her.

Congrats on the new boat! Sounds like a great maiden voyage.

Don't worry abou the name. Boats have a way of naming themselves. You just have to pay attention.

Good luck and happy Whalering!

Glad to hear the EFI versions of the 90 4-stroke are finally comming out. I spoke to the Whaler Dealer in the Florida Keys yesterday and they still only have the carburated models. He indicated that I may have to wait until the 2006 model year.

Enjoy your new boat, I am envious.
