Can someone please suggest a good mounting area for a VHF antenna on a 180 Ventura. I'll use the boat's bimini frequently and the covers while at the dock as well as having to contend with a bridge coming both in and out.
Are 3 or 4' antennas ineffective? I have read that antenna height is the biggest factor in radio performance yet since I probably won't be more than 5 or so miles from shore will the smaller antenna be fine? Thanks for helping.

I had a 18' Ventura, antenna mounted on a marelon rail mount starboard side, drilled hole for cable into access area. Antenna folded down neatly over rail, used a 5' shakespheare antenna.
