Finaly put my new 170 Montuak in her slip this weekend. The boat is flawless. Two concern's, one is the neutral sweet spot but I'm sure I'll get used to it.The other, has anyone noticed a change in tone of the motor when in neutral after the break-in? When I put her in the motor seemed very quiet at idle an after the break-in there is a very slight whine. Should I be concerned or is this normal?

Wish I knew exactly what this noise is but I consider it normal for a Mercury. My two other recent Merc's also had that same whine...no problem from it though it tended to be a bit annoying.

I sure hope that"whine" is o.k., I find it useful in telling me I finally found that neutral sweet spot you mentioned.

First I would like to correct my first post, 170 Montauk. Should have proofed my spelling.
I spoke with the Mercury tech from the marina I purchased from in DE, he said the whine is normal but whiney me I don't believe him, not yet till I hear more from this site . You guys are informative. Thanks!!

Have a 2004 and it does the same thing.

I have had that whine since owning the 170 and it only has about 25 hours on the engine.
Glad to see it is normal.

Hearing from you guys is starting to ease my mind.Need to go off of the issue to say this boat is a beauty!I was passing by a dockside restaurant in Cape May, NJ and heard someone say "that's the kind of boat I want". Needless to say I used to be that guy dreaming at the dock, not no more. Sorry for straying off. Thanks to all of you again for you help.
Love this 170 Montauk!!!!!
