Please tell me a little about the Dauntless models. Are they all center consoles? Do they have more storage than the Montauk? Are they self bailing? Does the size of the boat change any of that? Of course storage is less if it is smaller, I know that.

I have a 1988 Montauk and am very pleased with it. The only [concerns] I have are storage space and that it isn't self bailing. I have considered selling it a few times but love Whalers and if I did get rid of it I would want to get another Whaler.

Since 1998, all Dauntless models have been center consoles, and all Ventura models have been dual console "bow riders". From 1994-1998, both CCs and DCs were named Dauntless.

Currently, Whaler offers the 160, 180, and 220 Dauntless. The 160 (the boat I own) is closest to your Montauk in size, though it has considerably more beam. For storage, it has an anchor locker in the bow, the console, the pilot's seat (optionally a livewell), and full-width storage under the aft quarter seats. It is self-bailing, but if you stand a couple adults in the stern you'll get some water back in through the scuppers. This boat is incredibly seaworthy, and is the "biggest" boat of its size I've ever been on, but it's still only a 16-footer.

I don't know that I'd recommend switching from a Montauk to a 160 Dauntless, simply because it's not a very big change in size, versatility, or features.

The 180 Dauntless is the next boat up in size. On paper it's not that big a difference, but the overall impression is of a substantially bigger boat. Storage is similar to the 160 Dauntless, but with a larger console and more space aft. One of the aft storage areas is optionally a livewell. This boat has a clever full-width seat across the transom which can be folded down to make a roomy aft platform for fishing. In overall size, the 180 is similar to the Nantucket, but with much more storage. The price differential from the 160 is substantial. As much as I love my 160, I sometimes wonder whether the 180 isn't the boat I should have gotten.

The 220 Dauntless is another boat entirely, giving the impression of more of a flats boat with its very low gunwales and modest 12" draft. The console contains a head, usable I guess if you're not claustrophobic. I don't know much else about this boat, but in the showroom at least it gives the impression of having an enormous beam.

Past Dauntless CCs include the Dauntless 15, a really cute little boat with some nice features, but much, much smaller than the 160. There were also CC models in 14 and even 13 feet; I've never seen one in person but in photos they sure look like pretty small boats.

I would add, to the above very nice outline, that the Dauntless models have undergone some changes since 1998. The models from 1998 until the change to the current model (different years for different sized boats) were called “Dauntless 18”, etc. while the current models are designated “180 Dauntless”, etc. This could be important if you are looking to but a used rather than a new boat.

As far as I can tell the main differences between the former models and the current models (again, I’m limiting this discussion to post 1998 models that are all center console) is that the weight of the current models has been shifted somewhat towards the bow and, in some cases, the configuration of the stern has been changed to provide better performance with today’s heavier four stroke engines. Also the integrated stern seat is a feature of the “180 Dauntless” style boat. In the former Dauntless 18 the rear seat is removable which for some of us is a plus: you can leave it in for seating and lots of storage or take it out to increase cockpit room for fishing etc.

Also all the Dauntless boats, I believe, have internal fuel tanks.

I looked at a lot of boats before purchasing my used 2000 Dauntless 18 and I would say that you absolutely will achieve a tremendous increase in storage capacity by moving from a Montauk to this model. If you are planning to use your “new” boat in waters similar to those in which you’ve been comfortably using you Montauk then I would think that you’d be very pleased moving to the very versatile Dauntless. If you’re contemplating using your boat more “offshore” then I would say to consider the Outrage line of boats.

Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate it. Now I have to look around locally until I find one that I can check out in person. Unfortunately I can't buy a new boat, and I would have to sell my Montauk first anyway, but this helps my set my sights on the next Whaler. I have thought a few times about putting mine up for sale but not sure of the value, plus I just like this boat! Of course knowing I could get another Whaler would help to lesson my sellers remorse.

I mainly use mine for riding around with the family, weekend outings, and getting to a small island near here that some friends and I surf at when we get a chance.
