I saw some pics recently (don't remember the boat model or year)of holes cut in a console floor to accomodate in-console battery storage. Is this possible on a post-classic 170 Montauk, i.e. a 2004 model? Or is the console floor also the deck surface? Said another way, is there any dead space between the console floor and the deck?

Thanks,
Marsh

There is no floor to the console used on the 170 Montauk, it's just the deck, and it's flush with the rest of the deck. On the 160 Dauntless, the deck under the same console is recessed about 6 inches deep.

The floor of the console on the 170 is raised but it is the deck if that makes any sense. If you took the console off you'd be left with a raised box the size of the console about 3 inches high that is an integral molded part of the deck.

Interesting, mikey, I must have misread a previous post. Thanks for the correction. What you're describing is very clear on the diagram at http://www.whalerparts.com/Diagrams/2005/170%20Montauk/170MTK-binder5.pdf#page=1 .
