I just came across a 1998 17 Outrage with a Merc 125 and other goodies. The boat looks real good.
Anyone have this combination and how does it perform?

Only downside might be with the motor. That motor is a 2+2 4 cylinder. It only runs on two cylinders below 2500 rpm, then transitions to all four. This results in some rough running and surging if you try to operate in the narrow rpm band around that transition. It also results in a pretty good surge of power up onto plane. On the plus, it gets better fuel economy trolling than it would running on all 4 cylinders.

Dick - I have a '96 17 Outrage with a 115 Johnson OceanRunner - and this works well for me - 3 or 4 adults fishing and just dinking around. I have no experience with the Mercury engine. Also recall that I am up in the air about 4500 feet.

If things work out, I'll see if it floats in the Sound this summer/fall. ---- Jerry/Idaho

The 17 Outrage 11 in my opinion is one of the best Whaler hulls....very deep vee, dry, smooth ride, high freeboard.Great for rough water.
The Merc motor should run on two cyl. to 1800 rpm
This is done by progressive linkage. If set up properly you will not even notice it working.

This is an outstand boat. I have the same power and have been well pleased. The motor has not missed a beat.

I was able to get into the boat today and do a thorough inspection. It is a saltwater boat and has been rode hard and put away wet, I'll pass on that one.

I'm going to the dealer tomorrow and look at a new 150 Montauk
the 170 is out of my price range if I go new.

I just talked to my dealer and they have no 150 Montauks in stock they do have one on the way, only the 4th that they have been able to get this year. I put a deposit on it contingent on a sea trial.

Dick great to hear that you are getting back on a whaler. Is there fishing in your future?
