I am in the process of buying an '03 170 Montauk. I have a brouchure for '05 and '06. They both spec that there are three 8" cleats on this boat. The picture for the '06 does show two at the stern but the '05 book doesn't. Does anyone know when they started putting the cleats at the stern? Also, does anyone know if there is solid blocking the entire length where the railings are mounted so I could add them?

I'm not sure what year they made the stern cleats standard, maybe '04. There was sufficient backing on my 2002 model just in front of the rear side rail stantion, but would suggest you find a wood locating diagram for you particular year. It may be with the boat's paperwork or can be found on the Boston Whaler website.

Does anyone know what brand that Whaler uses so I can match and get them from a store rather than pay the dealers price?

Aft P/S 8" cleats on the 170 became standard in 2004.

The wood locating diagram for the 170 Montauk on www.whalerparts.com states the diagram is for 2002 and later hulls. There is wood under where you would want to mount the cleats. Consult the above diagram for precise locations.
