[Separated from another discussion.]

We just bought a 2003 170 Montauk with a 90-HP four-stroke Mercury. I have a VHF Marine Radio, Lowrance 337c SONAR, GPS, Chartplotter, and electric downriggers. Give me your opinion on setting up a second battery under the console.

The most important duty of a battery is to start the boat's engine. If you have an engine which cannot be easily pull-started, you should give serious consideration to having dual batteries and a primary battery distribution system which permits the isolation of the two batteries.

A single battery can easily run the auxiliary electrical load of a combinations SONAR, GPS, and Chartplotter. The load of electrical motors in downriggers is much greater and could lead to significant discharge of the battery. If you decide to install a second battery, you will find the SMALL BOAT ELECTRICAL discussion a good source of information on how to configure it.
