Having fallen for Whaler's when I was kid watching that show ( and mad at my dad for not being a park ranger) it has been a very, very long wait that will end this weekend, when I will pick up "my" 2003 170 with classic 90 merc 2s. I am pretty jacked up over this and very much appreciate the vast info and helpful folks on the site. I am certain that this site not only helped sway me toward BW, but also made me a more informed consumer. Also thanks to Hall's Marine on Lake Wylie; their presence at an August boat show in Charlotte reignited the spark, which was later kept alive by some guy in my neighborhood who trailers a classic on occasion.

I've many questions but there is one that someone could really help me out if answered soon. As I am driving about 150 miles to bring this new toy home, I'd like to have a spare tire/wheel but I do not know the size and the seller cannot answer it (long story). Can any of you with a 2003 and a karavan trailer tell me the tire size and wheel lug arrangement so that I can pick up a spare before I make the trip? I'd hate to be in US 74 in NC on a Saturday afternoon with a flat tire.

Many, many thanks for the help.

I ordered a spare tire and spare tire mount from Trailer Parts Superstore for my 2006 Karavan trailer. Happy customer!

So it is the 5 lug, 4.5 inch pattern for the lugs on 13 inch tires?

All I can say is that is the exact wheel and tire replacement for the 2006 Karavan trailer that came with my Montauk 170. I would look to verify if it is indeed the same as your year trailer if I were you.

Jaybld,

Congratulations on the purchase. I too became a whaler fan after watching "that show", but have yet to buy mine. I will probably stick with the 13'standard. Do you remember, was the whaler on the show powered with a 20 or 35hp Merc?

Thanks for the responses. I bought the boat from a soldier leaving Ft. Bragg. It originally was a Marine Max boat in Fla. This boat is not perfect, it was a little neglected but some spit and polish will add much. Impressed with the 90 merc, zips along just fine. Got her out on Lake Norman yesterday, after spending several hours locating and then by-passing a bad trailer wire. Spending hours seraching for the boat, negotiating and then picking up the boat, and then spending time cleaning the boat was pretty consuming, but the joy of seeing my 13-year old son grin as we sped across the lake and jumped a wake, was as they say, priceless. Rick 13, all I can say is 'do-it'. DickE, hope to see you sometime

Rick13,

I was growing up in Florida when that show was being filmed. The 13 foot Whalers usually were fitted by the dealers with 33 HP Johnson or Evinrude 2 Strokes. I think the max mine was rated for was 40 hp. I had a 33 hp, short shaft (no jokes, please) Evinrude. The boat could do 32 mph with 2 aboard and 2 6 gallon tanks of premix.
