I'm the new owner of a 1999 Outrage 18 that has a 150-HP Honda four-stroke motor. I have a few questions thought maybe some people on here could answer. What should my WOT RPM be? What should my top speed be? What speed and RPM should I be cruising at? Also, It looks like the previous owner converted the starboard fish box to a livewell. I didn't turn it on and it has water in it? Any ideas why this might be? The bilge is dry.

Thanks

The 1999 Outrage 18 a big, heavy boat. 18-feet 4-inches and 2,500-lbs dry. I'd try a 15.25 X 17 Powertech OFS prop or any other 17-inch pitch prop as a starting point.

What size and make prop is on it now? What is the RPM at WOT and the speed measured by GPS? What hole is the motor mounted on?

TomG used to own a 1999 18 Outrage with a BF150. I wonder if this is the same boat? I did a quick search here on CW and came up with this old thread regarding TomG's boat. It is good reading:

I think he eventually ended up with a 17 pitch prop and had a top speed of 43 MPH at 5800 RPM.

I did another search and found a later post by TomG after he did more testing with his set-up. Here is a quote from the thread:

Chris, I have the same Outrage (1999) with a Honda 150 on it. No trim tabs, although I have considered adding them. When I first installed the 150, the dealer put it all the way down with a Michigan Wheel Rapture 14.25x19 prop. I had a very poor holeshot and the boat didn't plane easily, especially with a full tank of gas. The WOT speed was around 41-MPH. Also, I could only get to 5,400-RPM (redline on the Honda is 6000-RPM). Based on information I got here from various folks, I went back to the dealer, had him raise the motor one hole, and switch the prop to a Rapture 14.25 x 17 prop. I now have a decent holeshot, WOT speed is 44-45 mph, and at WOT I get to 5,800 RPM.

I'm satisfied with the performance, but would like to try a 15- or 16-inch pitch prop to see if I can get to 6,000 RPM and see what else changes. Hope this info helps.

Tom

I hope this helps.

[T]he engine is mounted on the [seco]nd hole from the top. I'm not sure if [I] should raise [it] another hole. I Can't tell what type of prop is on there. It says "Honda" on it so [I]'m assuming it's the factory prop. Is there a place [I] should be looking where it would tell me what type of prop?

WOT [I]'m at around 5,400-RPM, and speed is about 30-knots. That's with three adults, 1/4-tank of fuel.

The RPM seems in the range. Probably could be a bit higher. But [I] think [I] could get more top speed.

Any more suggestions?

[I] should also add, I'm not looking to achieve greatest top end speed as much as [I] am looking for the quickest planing and best midrange performance when at cruising speed.

Please correct the spelling of the personal pronoun "I" in your writing.

I am assuming your prop is stainless steel and Honda doesn't manufacture stainless steel props. They buy them from Powertech, Solas and Precision and have their brand name stampped on them. There should be some numbers stamped on the hub of the prop like 14.25 X 19. Take a close look and see if you can find any such identifying numbers.

34.5 MPH seems very slow. What are you measuring speed with? A GPS? Are you trimming your motor up (out) when at WOT? How is the hole shot?

You want your RPM to be as close to 6000 RPM as possible because that is where the peak HP is produced.

Raising your motor one hole will increase RPM and speed and if your prop is not ventilating now, it might be a good idea.

Because TomG's identical boat and motor achieved 44 MPH something doesn't seem right. I can't help but wonder why your boat is almost 10 MPH slower.

Oh, and if you would have posted this topic in the "Performance" forum, you would have had a much larger audiance to read the thread and provide input.

what does it mean for the prop to be ventilating? How do i know if it is or isn't?
