It looks like we have purchased our first Whaler. After looking for several weeks and having made offers on two other boats (which failed their surveys) we finally have a boat that has passed the hull/structural inspection by a surveyor. The boat is a 1996 Outrage 19 with a 175 HP Mercury Offshore Outboard. The Outrage will be moored at our camp on Lake George, NY and will be used mainly for water skiing and cruising around the lake. After reading these forums it seems like I have many more questions than answers. I was hoping to get some input from the seasoned Whaler owners on this forum.

The outboard still has the original 19P prop. Can anyone recommend the best prop for this boat/motor for my intended use of skiing and general cruising. Since I don't own the boat yet - I don't know the rpms at WOT.

Many people who own this vintage Outrage have also indicated that it benefits tremendously from Trim Tabs. As I noted above the first two boats we had offers on were completely waterlogged (1990 Outrage 18 and 1987 Outrage 20). Is the 1996 Outrage 19 less prone to water logging due to the differences in construction? Will adding trim tabs increase the likelihood that the hull could take on water? Is there a consensus as to which brand of tabs is better - Bennett or Lenco?

Do people recommend using a ski pylon for this boat or do they use the stern cleats? If a ski pylon which model?

I am going to have to perform upgrades one at a time - so I would be interested in your opinion as to which upgrade will be the most bang for the buck in terms of performance.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Dan

With a Mercury 150 EFI I turn a 17P Powertech prop 5400rpms. If that 175 can turn a 19P prop close to 5600 rpms then your fine. For skiing you'll probably want a 17P at the most.

Bennett 9x9 tabs where optional when the boat was new. I would probably put the Bennet M120's on if I was you. There are little pockets molded into the hull to mount the tabs. There is also a little piece of wood glassed into the console above the rigging tube. That is where the factory originally mounted the Bennett pump. I think that the Bennetts are quieter, more reliable and have better customer service. The Lenco's are simpler to install.

There was a ski pylon available as an option. It slides into the motor well railing. I would check with the dealer, or Ebay, or possibly a company called,

They originally made the rails for our boat.

Have fun with one of the best Whalers ever made.

pw out.
