I'm looking at a 1998 Outrage 23 that has recently been repowered with a Honda 225. [What is] the maximum transom weight of [a 1998 Boston Whaler OUTRAGE 23]? Many seem to have dual 150-HP two-stroke motors which combined weigh more than the 610-lb Honda. Does 610-lbs sound OK for this boat? I like the reliablity of the Honda engines but they do weigh a lot!

The Honda BF225 may be heavy but so are all 225 HP 4 strokes.

I think the 23 foot Outrage could easily handle the weight.

I have twin 135 optis and they weigh in at about 900 lbs. Also, this is a very common configuration for the 23 outrage.

One Honda 225 is no problem even if you add a kicker.

I have a 1992 23 Walkaround that had [twin] 150-HP Johnson motors. I found the scuppers to stay below the waterline and boat would drift stern first. Weight on transom was 994-lbs. Upgraded to a 250-HP E-TEC over the winter and the weight decreased in half and scuppers are above water. Speed is same if not better, oil consupmption decreased 75%, not to mention gas consumption. Last September, took a rouge wave over stern and took boat and engines down for about a minute, filled cabin and the old saying " Thank God it's a Whaler" was true. Boat popped up, started one engine, other engine died and made it home.
My $.02.

Thanks- I called Boston Whaler to get the specifications. Max HP: 300, Max person: 9, Swamped capacity: 4,500; Dry weight: 2900; Fuel tank: 166 gal. Boston Whaler did not publish maximum engine weights at that time because heavy four-strokes were not really a [concern]. A lot of the [Boston Whaler c.1998 OUTRAGE 23 boats] came with dual 135's. New 135 optimax weighs 431 times 2 = 862-lbs. Honda 225 = 610-lbs. I would like to get input from others with a c.1998 OUTRAGE 23 on their engine configuration and if their boat's scuppers are up out of the water.

Interestingly, the new 21 Outrage weighs only 200 less but the swamped capacity is about 1000 lbs more. The max engine weight is only 700 lbs. I saw a 21 Outrage this weekend with a 200 Verado and the scuppers were three-fourths underwater with boat empty sitting in still water.

Just repowered our 2001 outrage 23 with a single 275 Verado. The boat performs well with this setup. The previous setup, a 225-HP Optimax, caused the boat to appear "bow heavy" when at the dock. The added weight of the Verado helps the boat to sit level and the scuppers are still well above the waterline. I have noticed a bit of "transom flex" when raising the engine all the way up, but my mechanic says it's fine and that I am just paranoid (there's no sign of any cracking, etc.). I don't know the weight of the verado off hand, but i'd guess it's at least as heavy as the Honda.

It appears that the weight of the Honda BF225 is ok. The next question is if 225 HP is enough power for the 23 Outrage. It requires 150-HP to get on plane. Is 225 enough for several people? I'm not concerned with having the fastest boat, but hate asking someone to go stand up front to get on plane.

Retinadoc: I'd consider going with a bit more HP. My 225HP 2-stroke was a little under powered with a full load of gear and people and since 2-strokes typically have more torque i'd suspect your hole shot would be even slower with the Honda. This is a heavy boat to begin with, and when you fill it with 166 gallons of fuel, plus the water tankd, a couple of batteries, fill the live well, and put a few guys on it, it's borderline sluggish. That being said, the 275 Verado seems to be a good match with this boat, far better than the previous 225hp setup. My performance numbers aren't quite what they should be yet due to the prop (a 19P mirage) so i've just had a 15P Rev4 installed. I haven't tried it yet, but my old man has and he says the hole shot is fantastic and that he's able to hold a plane at lower speeds when it gets snotty. I am not trying to speak to specific brands, just saying that you can significantly increase the HP without adding too much more weight and the benefits are substantial.
