Is a 60-HP two-cycle enough [power] for [a 14 Dauntless]? No plans to water ski, but some rough water, and plans to take the kids along. Seems like a heavy boat for the size.

Any help would be appreciated..

There is no definitive answer for this question. How much weight will be in the boat, what kind of rough water, what is your expectation for getting on plane and many other variables will determine your satisfaction with 60 Hp. The D14 is a heavy boat but with a 75 Hp 2-stroke she will jump on plane, pull skiers or tubes and easily haul four full size adults. WOT will reach about 42 MPH.

Based upon my experience with a 75 Hp Merc, I would think a 60 HP would be fine if you are looking for a recreational ride, especially if it is a 2-stroke.

I agree with Davej14. I'm betting that 60 will do just fine for general use. Expect between 30 and 35 MPH top end. I'm set up just like Dave with a 75 2 stroke. I have a Doel-fin and love it. If your performance is a little slow out of the hole a doel-fin will do the trick. I can throttle up slowly (like only halfway) instead of throttling up hard to get on plane. I've been running at lower speeds like 20mph lately with no problems.

Check the Edgewater boats website and look at their 14 footer's performance with a 50 HP motor. Their boat weighs 1000 pounds too. They use a doel-fin.

You may not be able to pull up an adult waterskier but otherwise I think you're OK. If I ever repower, it'll probably be with a 60 Horse motor.

If you're thinking of buying and you do, I'd like to know how it performs with a 60.

Good luck :)

You may wan't to consider a Yamaha 70 or 90 2 stroke engine. I have already researched this and have found that these two engines seem to be the only upgrade in power without adding too much weight. I have a Merc 60 2 stroke now on a 150 Sport and don't recommend it. Better to have more power and back off the throttle to cruise, but have more power when needed. If you have the opportunity to choose without the change costing a lot of money I would vote for a larger engine with reserve power.
