I have looked at a 1995 Dauntless 17 [with dual console and walk-through to the bow], and it seems like a very nice boat. The layout seems very much un-Whalerlike though. The other Dauntless models that I have seen are all equipped with a center console. Was this departure from the normal Whaler seating an experiment or something "borrowed" from another Brunswick division? I find this one to be sort of intriguing and may go back for a second look. Can anyone tell me more about this model? Thank you. :-)

Whaler still makes a version of this "Bowrider" called the Ventura. The early ones carried the Dauntless name. The boat is all Whaler. If a bowrider is a style boat you like I am sure you will be hapy with it.

Hello Fred,

I am not the expert on this model but I too am giving it serious consideration. Don't worry if it is "not whaler like", it actually is in the fact that it is unsinkable. It terms of design, BW makes center, side, and twin consoles, not to mention cuddy cabins. So once you get to know BW, you realize they are more than just Montauks.

I think this model was only made in 95 and 96. I also think it was replaced by the Ventura model. I have seen some posts stating it can be hard to get on plane, that is why you see so many with fins on the cavatation plate.

The only concern I have is that the model was produced for only a couple of years. With so much cost associated with design and development, one has to wonder why they stopped production.

Good luck in your search -

Bill

Hello. I have a 1997 Dauntless dual console with a 115 Yamaha 4 stroke. I use it for salmon fishing off the West Coast of Canada. I also have an 8-hp kicker on it. These boats are made with the Whaler Accutrack hull same design as the Outrage 17. I am over weight in the back with the 115 and kicker but am totally happy with the Yamaha 4-stroke. I have had this boat out in 2 meter swells and 4-6 ft chop (not on purpose) and have made it home dry and safely. I bought the boat because of the dual console, which with the bow cover on one is shielded from the wind and rain. This boat also has a full enclosure. In the center console you have nowhere to hide. If I am correct in 1997, Whaler raised the transom to 25" from 20". Mine is a 25". 1995 and 1996 are 20". I suspect water was spilling over the back. Storage is better than the outrage with 2 compartments in the rear, compartments under the bow seats, a large storage compartment in the floor (holds at least 5 - 30 LB salmon), and an anchor locker up front. One thing I have to say is I have never felt unsafe in this boat.
This size 17' had been replaced with the 18' Ventura in 1998. 20' also available in 1997. Now days the 20' is no longer available but Whaler makes an 18' and 21'. This model has the self-baling deck, 39 us gal fuel tank, and bilge pump in the storage locker.
Specs.
LOA: 17' Beam: 7' Draft: 12" Boat weight: 1500 lbs.
Max wt. Capacity: 1700 lbs. Max HP: 130
