I drove to my local Boston Whaler dealer and looked at a 2008 Montauk 170 last weekend. The model I looked at did not have the livewell, and there were changes in the splash well and sump that were pretty obvious.

The splashwell has a different shape. It is basically the same, but the fiberglass gets much wider as the splashwell comes from the transom towards the cockpit of the boat. There is non-skid now on the top of each side of the widened splashwell. It appears to be designed to be stepped on if someone opted for the stern seating and didn't want people stepping on their cushions as they boarded the boat over the stern.

The other noticable change was that the sump containing the bilge pump has been made significantly larger than it was between 2002 and 2007. I wish I had thought to measure it. It looks like it has been designed larger to accomodate the additional pump and plumbing required if someone ordered the livewell as an option.

I will be ordering the 2008 Montauk 170 in the next couple of weeks, and will be delighted to share pictures and measurements of my new boat after it is delivered. I won't be getting a livewell, so the changes in the splashwell and sump should be easy to see.

I ordered one a few weeks ago and should get it by early November. I went with the livewell. I will post pics as soon as I get it! I am anxiously waiting...

Ben, You ordered from Clew's correct? I'll need to drop by when your boat comes in to check it out.

I recently got to boat on a workmate's new Montauk 170 with the L4NA 90 fourstroke in San Diego. You will love the quietness of the motor. The holeshot seemed good to me and top end speed was more than adequate. No speedo or GPS installed, so I can not tell you exact MPH/knots.

Other features I liked on the new 170: The new non-skid pattern...traps far less dirt and easier to clean. The helm console has a "cut in" for to increase toe-room steering behind the helm.

Warranty [problems]: the bow light and the winch strap bow eye. Light has been frequently reported here. The bow eye something new! We saw on my friends boat and one in the dealer lot later. The 316L stainless broke, perhaps an issue with "Chinese 316" vs. "American"...I am told there is a difference! I suggest you inspect these two areas closely at delivery.

Good luck with your purchase. I used Clews while living in Philly. They were a great dealership and did some quality electronics installation and trailer work on my 15. Sort of a funny location for a boat dealer, though.

Update! - My wife and I ordered our 2008 Montauk 170 today! It will have the red logo with black trim, fishing package, swim platform, and black bimini top. Now we need to find ways to pass the time, which suddenly seems to be standing still.
