I'm planning on having a Baystar hydraulic steering system installed on my 170 Montauk.

Baystar also has an option for a tilt steering helm that adjusts 3 ways. 42,6 and -6 degrees. pdf

I have wanted my console raised so that the steering wheel would be in a more comfortable position. Does the Baystar tilt helm raise the steering wheel enough to make a difference?

While I don't have an answer to your direct question, here is a thought for you.

I recall, a long time ago, the debate on the height of the Montauk 170 console and the height of the steering wheel when it first entered the market. In this thread, a member suggested installing a different bezel in the opposite position to gain height.

In finding it in a search, I see you were actually part of this thread. Too funny! Scroll way down.

Hope it helps with your project.

All the helms I saw in that PDF you linked were Seastar helms. I've disassembled a Baystar Tilt Helm and it is NOT the same as the Seastar tilt helm. Here's how the Baystar Tilt Helm works: Take the Baystar regular helm pump, set it back behind the dash out of sight. Install a short extension on the front of the helm pump to convert the usual taper shaft with a keyway and threads to a Flat shaft. Install a mechanical tilt helm linkage (similar to what you would find on the Teleflex mechanical helms that have the tilt option) to the front of your dash linked to the baystar helm pump that you installed behind your dash.

If you prod me enough, I might go out to the garage and dig up the "parts" that convert the Baystar to a Tilt model and shoot a digital picture of them.

On second thought, here's Teleflex's own literature and installation instructions for the Baystar Tilt Helm. Take a look at page 9, it has dimensions.

I've wanted to raise my steering position for a long time. I just live with it until I have a reason to complain. About 3 weeks ago I should not have been out on the ocean but I was, and got caught having to go against whitecaps for about 30 miles. I still have the bruises on my thighs from my steering wheel. Maybe this is better than getting my ribs bruised? :-)

Thanks. The part number I'm looking at is HH4315.

I'm just trying to figure out if the $500 tilt helm cost will make a big enough improvement in height to justify the cost.
