I have a 2004 montauk with a 115 merc 4 stroke and want to add a trolling motor for both fishing and as a backup to my main power plant. what hp motor are you guys running?

I would consider the 6 hp Merc with the 2.15 gear ratio a good little motor and only 55 lbs. Assume from the year you listed this is a 170 Montauk. I also like the 9.9
Prokicker but is more money weight and power than you need.

This past summer I ran my 2006 170 while trolling with a Merc 5hp 4str Long Shaft and it functioned a-1.

I also run a 5hp 4 stroke on my 170 Montauk. It's great for trolling and good as an auxillary. It will do 7-8 mph at WOT in fair weather.

I run a 6 hp kicker on my 2004 170 Montauk.
