Author Topic:   Advice on 170 Montauk Cover (??)

Did the search engine thing and found some info such as - Never buy Taylor made cover and a recommendation for Coverquest - so -at the risk of being flamed .....

What is the best cover for price and ease of use on the 170 Montauk (mine is a 2007) - I called Mills Canvas company but they wanted over $800 (even with a 10% discount) which is WAY out of my range. I also called the CoverQuest number that was listed on the boards in about 2002 and got a quote from them for the '07 (which they state is not updated on-line yet) but am unsure of how easy they are to use.

Is there a difference in "Sharkskin" covers by manufacturer? CoverQuest has a Sharkskin for the '07 170 Montauk ($345) and I see Go2Marine listing a 'Westland' Sharkskin for $328 and a TaylorMade for $311....

My main problem is that all these sites show a generic V-Hull picture even when stating that the cover is for the 170 Montauk.... I would like to know if anyone has experience with how these things look/work/fit/last etc.

I guess my main purpose for the cover is to keep leaves and pine needles/debris out - I don't know if I would trailer with a cover on, however the site search revealed that some on these boards feel they get better mileage with a cover on....(?). The boat stays on the trailer in my driveway here in NC. I have no clue what to buy and am afraid to just order one on-line since they cost so much and can't be returned. I would hate to purchase something that I do not use because I get disgusted dealing with it. Also, what about the O/B engine cover, do I have to purchase separate? I don't see the engine covers listed as being included and I don't see where to add to purchase on some of these sites.

Any help, advice experience appreciated. ("Flame On" I guess)

Thanks in Advance.

I used to be a distributor for Westland boat covers and the quality and fit was always excellent.
To my knowledge "Sharkskin" is a patented brand of fabric as "Sunbrella" is.

I had a Westland Sharkskin cover on my 1999 Montauk, it fit like a glove. The boat was stored outdoors with only the Westland cover on. After 3 years the cover was deteriorating and probably wouldn't have lasted another season. No complaint, that was about what I expected for the price.

At that time Westland physicly patterned each boat model prior to putting a cover into production, don't know if they still do that.

The key to a good fitting cover is that it was made from a pattern from your model boat not a generic pattern.

The fabric type will govern the life of the cover and the cost.

I went with a Taylor Made custom cover part #63000ON. Final cost was 305.00 USD.

Here is a link to some pictures of how it looks on my 2006 Montauk 170.

Hope this helps.

I purchased our full cover from BoatCoversDirect.com. Bought the Sunbrella version for our 2003 170 (same hull as yours)fits very well. The cover comes with tie downs as well as a drawstring sewn into perimeter of the cover. I pull the boat from south florida to N.E. Geoargia and back at least twice a year with the cover on over the road. No trouble at all so far. Price? Without checking on the site I rememeber it being somwhere under 500 dollars. Have been very satiafied.Hope this helps

Andrewdavis34 -

Did the people at Boat Covers Direct say anything about whether their custom cover for the 170 Montauk had to be redesigned for the 4" of additional height of the console on the 2008 model? I am considering ordering their Sunbrella cover for my 2008 Montauk 170, and want to be sure it will fit okay.

Thanks!
