I am assisting a friend who is looking for a Montauk. The owner of a local boat asserts that his 2002 Montauk is narrower than other models of Montauk. My search of this site and the Brunswick site suggests that the late model Montauks are about eight inches wider than the classic models. Does anyone have other information. Thanks. Dave

Yes that is correct. Starting with the 170 Montauk model the hull dimensions and the interior space changed significantly. the engines offered and the options are still changing.

Check the reference section of this site and possibly do a search. then check the bostonwhaler.com site. You will find a wealth of information to answer your questions.

[I]n 2002 you could get the new hull or the old hull. [W]e had a classic 2002 hull and now have a 2010 model. This may cause some purists to cuss me out but [I] love the 2010. [T]he 2002 17 was a great boat but [I] feel the 2010 hull is a huge improvement. [The 170 MONTAUK has a] softer ride, and it just feels WAY bigger inside.

See http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/170Montauk/ for a good summary of the differences between the original 17-foot MONTAUK and the 170 MONTAUK that was introduced in 2002.
