A 200HP mercury outboard, year 1998, requires mixing the oil in gas. This was surprising to me when I learned this. I am looking to buy a boat with this 1998 motor. There is a label next to the gas fill cap that states to mix 50:1. My 1994 Mercury 50HP had oil injection with an oil reservoir. Is this unusal for a 1998 motor?

Someone has altered the engine, which could be a sign of a prefious failure and damage. I would not buy it. All V-6 Mercs of that vintage had factory oil injection unless it is a racing division motor.

Jertronic - This relates to my last thread post on your first email about the boat. There is a plastic gear wheel inside the block that provides the variable oil ratio to feed the engine based on throttle and rpms. It is notorious for failing, forcing pre-mix in the fuel tank or an expensive removal of the powerhead. See "Reference" section on the website for more details on the system.

There are a small minority of original owners of both Mercurys and Evinrude VROs that did not trust the system from Day One and decided to pre-mix, but that is a very small minority of the total population.

Good luck and hope you get out on Cape Cod Bay next spring!

My 1998 mercury 200hp, has a seperate oil tank. the engine will mix oil automatically. I.e no premixing.
I also have an older late 80's evinrude 40hp VRO. on the motor the fuel pump failed. instead of replacing an expensive VRO/fuel pump setup, I chose to replace with a normal fuel pump and pre-mix oil/gas myself.
