Author Topic:   170 Montauk - Hole cut in sump?

While cleaning my new MOntauk 170 after using it yesterday, I discovered that a hole has been cut between the sump and the rigging area on the starboard side of the boat. The bilge pump discharge hose is routed through a circular hole. From that hole, it looks like someone took a jig saw and cut an opening most of the way to the bottom of the sump.

I assume this opening was cut to allow water to drain from inside the rigging area into the sump. I can understand the necessity of getting water out of the rigging area if any water ever did get in there, but I am wondering why the cut wasn't finished in any way. The fiberglass is jagged from the cut, and there is no sealant on the edges of the hole.

Has anyone with a Montauk 170 noticed a similar cut below the bilge pump discharge hose in the sump of their boat? If so, was it finished in any way, or is it just a jagged cut through the glass?

Also, if the drain plug was left out of the boat, water would not only fill the sump, but the area below the starboard seat and the rigging tube to the center console. Will water being in there cause problems at some time in the future?

Thanks for any thoughts!

Have not personally seen anything on a 170, but the crazy jigsaw bandit got apparently got loose at the factory in the building where they keep the 210 outrages as well, we discovered some of his rather unfinished handiwork on our brand new outrage this spring. Nothing dangerous or that would allow water to get in anywhere, just annoying lack of pride in craftsmanship. In my mind that is the only thing that could account for someone making the cut I saw on our outrage, looking at it, pronoucing it "good enough," and then moving on to his next task. Very disturbing...

Hmmm, Traveller, I'll take a look at my 170 tomorrow in the daylight. 2003.

My 2006 170 does not have the cutout you refer to. Notwithstanding, with the plug out water would enter the rigging area you speak of due to the manner in which bw has installed the hose from the pump. Yes, inside there are a multitude of wires which trail from the motor and lights. Actually if sufficient water did enter it could conceivably find it's way right up to the rps. Some of the wires are connected right within if you check via the circular inspection cover. What I did to prevent corrosion at the connectors was raise them to the highest point and tie them. Be careful inside since there is a lot of rough, prickly fibreglass thats will gouge your hands all to hell. I learned the hard way. Wear a glove?

I called my dealer, and he looked at other 2008 Montauk 170's they have on display in their showroom. He said every one of them had a cut like the one in my boat. He guessed it was an attempt to drain that area into the sump.

While I understand the desire to provide a drain for that area, I am disappointed that Boston Whaler didn't design something more in keeping with the quality of the rest of the boat. For example, a scupper in that area, with a flapper to prevent water from flowing in while allowing water to flow out, would look much better and work better, too.

Traveller,

Here's what mine looks like: {url}http://dennislee.smugmug.com/gallery/3981067#231403579{/url}

The pictures following this one show some of the huge cracks in the casing of the utility compartment. I wish I could have gotten a shot of the hole that leads back to the sump. I'm curious to see if water would collect in here. I may need to locate my electrical connections a little higher like Fisherman did.

DLee,

Thanks for sharing those pictures. The sump in my 2008 model looks much different from yours. The sump area looks deeper, wider, longer, and the drain plug goes in on the port side. The base of the opening for the bilge pump hose is two inches above the bottom of the sump. In your pictures, it looks like the bilge hose is almost at the bottom of the sump.

2008 Montauk Sump Dimensions:

Cover of sump = 24" X 11.25"

Sump is 7" deep, with an Atwood Sahara 1100 bilge pump with
built in float switch.
