How far out from the rear of the [reversible pilot seat on a Boston Whaler 170 MONTAUK] does the wood under the [deck] go? The reason I ask is that I will be installing a Moeller 26 gallon tank and need would like to know how far back I can mount the hold down straps and still be biting into wood. I have looked at the PDF wood diagram but I'm still unsure.

You will find all of the wood and [WhaleBoard] location diagrams for your model on the Whaler web-site parts page.

They will accurately depict where to attach whatever.

The way I read the diagram, you have 8 separate peices of backing under the RPS (a combination of both wood and
phenolic). Your question essentially is what is the forward-to-aft measurement of all these peices together. I say 16". I would sit on the deck behind the RPS and measure from the forward RPS mounting bolts to the aft ones. This will give you a rough idea of much much farther aft you have backing material. You should be able to infer this from drawing an imaginery rectagular box in your mind after looking at the footprint and layout of all RPS mounting bolts. You could also use a stud finder to confirm what you believe to be the aft end of these backing peices. I have not used a stud finder on the floor but mine works just fine in locating wood on the gunnels.

[Removed a few comments related to qwerk in thread index listing. Also removed discussion on fiberglass fuel tank manufacturers. Please use a separate thread for that discussion. Thanks--jimh]

Feejer,
You're welcome for the helpful reference to securely fasten your large fuel tank tie downs where there is no wood aft of the RPS.
