Water in Gas

About a year ago I bought a new Mercury 75-HP FOURSTROKE motor. It was installed on my boat by a boat dealer. On the first outing water kept getting in the gas causing the boat to not start. We had to be towed in. This was very upseting since it was a new motor. I was told that the gas in the tank had been in the tank too long thus had water in it. I took it out drained it and reinstalled the tank. Took the boat out today, the motor ran great for two hours, we beached it for about 30 minutes. When we started it up the water was back in the gas. Any suggestions? Would a water seperator work?

Separator will help, and for an outboard can be the clear bottom bowl type. They will catch only so much water. If you have left the cap vent open, spray or rain can get in if in the open.
If this is an installed tank, check the fuel cap for good "O ring".
Also check the tank vent on the side of the boat. Some are in spray paths and are pointed in the wrong direction, so they scoop up water.
If fuel lines are old and run through water in the bilge, they might be cracked and suck up water.
That is all I can think of. Might check search on this site.

Water is introduced to your fuel tank by three or four methods:
--you pump it in with the fuel you buy;
Water does enter your fuel tank via your outboard motor.

Something else to check....make sure the fuel line is properly secured on both side of your primer bulb. If you have a loose fitting and your primer bulb happens to be laying in a puddle of water, it IS possible for water to be drawn into your engine while running through this loose fitting. A fellow mechanic friend of mine fought this similar problem on a boat that had the engine mounted on a bracket. It turned out that the primer bulb was laying in the water half the time and sure enough...one of the hose clamps was loose and the line was not really secured tightly to the bulb. Everything was fine at the shop...but the problem quickly returned everytime the boat went back in the water....quite a lesson!!
