I went to the boat show yesterday in Tobay Beach. I was looking forward to seeing the new Boston Whaler boats. They had the 13-foot Sport. What a disappointment. The vinyl graphics look cheap and tacky. Very poorly designed. This boat does not compare to the old 13-foot Sport.

Buy a used one. There are plenty of nice used Boston Whaler boats out there for sale at bargain prices. In my opinion, Bayliner cannot compare.

I was trying to say that the quality and design of the new 13 sport is more close to a Bayliner than a Boston Whaler.

Trey,

Is your problem with the quality of the graphics or the quality of the boat's construction or the quality of the design of the graphics or the boat? You didn't make that clear to me.

Design quality is a pretty difficult thing to determine. Of course it is easy to determine your individual preferences of one design over another. However, likes and dislikes have nothing to do with quality. Quality of construction is easier to determine than quality of design. My opinion is that there is no question that Boston Whaler boat construction is very high and much better than the majority of other builders.

If you believe the quality of the graphics is below the quality expected on a Boston Whaler boat you may be correct.

If you have looked at a recently built Bayliner you might be surprised at what a nice boat it is.

When you can steal like new 130's that are 2-3 years old for well under $10k, why would you want a flashy ugly orange colored 2009 for 50% more?

why is everyone so hung up on the side decals?

they are an option are they not?

dont like orange? dont buy it.

what are the only real differences between the 2009 boat and the 2008?

a little deadrise? some additional features you can purchase later? more aggressive sheer line?

I think the new 130 Sport is supposed to be a price point boat ($9,999) with nearly all options dealer installed. This gives more margin to the dealer, engages and empowers the dealer to sell the boat up, and makes the factory aspect more simple and cost effective.

I personally don't like the lines, and have the 2008 130 Sport. To each their own.

Jefecinco,
Before I purchased my 2000 21 Conquest, I looked at many different brands. The last boat that I looked at was a Sea Pro. The boat had a big crack in the gel coat above the steering wheel, the dealer acted like it was no big deal. I don,t want a boat that is put together with spackle and horse sh***. When I stepped onto the 21 Conquest I knew it was a solid boat. Its built like a tank. The boat that I have has had some problems but I am very happy with my it. I expect a Whaler to be built along the same lines as a BMW. Did I insult Whaler or Bayliner that is the question?

Trey,

I can't tell from your writing if you are insulting anything. The title of your post appears to denigrate Boston Whaler and Bayliner.

From what you wrote it seems that you are disappointed in the graphics, not in the boat. You say the old 13 boat and the new 13 Sport do not compare? OK, but how can they not be compared?

If you are seeking to debate Sport 13 quality of construction or design there is no point.

If you are making a point about the hull graphics I certainly don't have a problem with your opinion.

Take the stupid graphics off then.

They are trying to sell the boat into the Gen X crowd in order to start an ownership lineage. People often tend to trade up within the same brand. Right now Boston Whalers including your beat up and busted classics are seen as boring, low performance, "old man" boats.

Gen X do not drive "old man" Buicks and they don't purchase plain white boats just because they float nicely when upsdie down. They also like cup holders and built in features. The new Sport is not for you, it is for a new generation that frankly could care less what you old men think about their likes and dislikes.

You got your old classic, keep it and enjoy it, you were not going to buy a new Whaler anyway and Boston Whaler has figured that out. Why design a boat for people who will not buy a new boat, well, they don't and they are not.

BW's use of cheap vinyl colorized masking on the cheesy '09 130 Sport versus a durable imbedded gel-coat paint job is like putting lipstick on a pig and it shows.

Although there is nothing constant as change, the '09 130 sport looks looks a piece of euro trash, the recent R&D layoffs at BW resulted in out of work cartoonists having been hired as replacement workers.

I see manufacturing processes as this as the genisis of the lowering of standads and cheapening of the product line.

durable imbedded gel is expensive.

removable and replacabe vinyl wraps allow for quick and resy repairs.

dont like it, dont buy it as an option. the boat looks good in white, it always has.

would you be bad mouthing the horrible orange wrap if the boat looked like a classic? what would your focus be then? the horrible wrap or the boat?

why is an OPTION such a huge deal?

i doubt any lay offs have turned into what you are calling a "euro trash" boat.

i think highanddry is spot on. they are trying to get people into the brand. historicall people who enter the brand stay with it.

most of you have a classic and never (or rarely) left the brand. they are trying to get that momentum again.
